Challenge: Shadows III (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 28-80mm f/2.8-4 L USM
Location: my front yard
Date: Jun 6, 2006
Aperture: 11
ISO: 320
Shutter: 1/500
Date Uploaded: Jun 8, 2006

I was aiming to get only the shadows, so I wasn't paying attention to framing the top of Lex's head, so it's a bit tight at the top. I thought the shot looked more dynamic with the kids themselves in it, once I looked at them, though, so I didn't crop them out. I wish we actually had some landscaping for the background, instead of just dirt, but I'm trying really hard to be patient on that...

Greetings from your own critique club.

First Impression
Nice cute shot.
Composition:
Composition is okay, but for this particular challenge you can exclude the faces of the kids. But the expression and kids are so cute, you tempt to include in the frame. For the shadow challenge, you could have done different crop witout the faces.
Subject:
I really like the subject. Nice take on the challenge.
Technical (Colour and light):
The color and lighting in the front is perfect.
Improvement:
Different crop.
Summary:
Nice over all image, with cute kids.

Cheers!!

Hi!

So cute!! I think the shadows still seem to be the main element and the croppin doesn't bother me. They are very cute:)

Hi Margie!

What a couple of cuties! I love the way your daughter's pigtails are caught mid-bounce.

You did well capturing a shadow and really making it a main element in the photo. A lot of the other entries included a shadow but weren't about the shadow, and you've avoided that particular pitfall of the theme. I do think the light here is a bit harsh, and it should use some sharpening. I think a polarizer might help tone down the brightness, since I know the kids probably don't play like that at sunrise when the light is all golden and pretty.

Hello from Álex, CTP MkII

First Impression: Good idea to ask the kids play with the shadows, and very funny
Composition: I agree with you, it's better with the kids on it.
Subject: Very good
Technical: the colors are not as bright as I would like to (maybe the light was too harsh). And seem you had a problem with the jpeg conversion, because I see some artifacts (on the face of her, i.e.)
Improvement: jpeg conversion, light.
Summary: Good shot, very consistent scores this week...

another child photo shadow thing. however, these shadows emphasize the action and purpose of photo, so you get a thumb's up. however, consider going with black and white when color doesn't help, like here. or perhaps with a subtl desat.

great shot. only thing is the blowouts on this one, in the hair/arms from the sun being directly ahead. might have used a faster shutter speed. the far bacground is somewhat distracting as well. these kids are definitely adorable, and spite what i pointed out, this is definitely a great capture. looking forward to seeing more pictures from you of these darling children. 5

good luck!

Great capture... it almost looks as if the the shadow is telling a different story from the main image..

I really like the use of the shadows in this picture... The pulling of hair idea is full of humour. How long did it take you to get them in that exact pose?

Really nice job of incorporating the challenge into your subject. Too bad the background wasn't prettier.

I think the capture of the shadow is very interesting. I might have taken this further and cropped for just the shadows, eliminating the chidren, or maybe just included their feet and legs. I really dislike the dirt backgroundIt's very distracting.
