I was unable to vote on this challenge so this is the first time I've seen this image, but I think the editted version looks really good and would have scored much better.

Thanks for all of the comments. I'm afraid I misread the rules about using levels. I have since cropped and adjusted the contrast of the image and I am quite pleased with how it came out:

Funny. Try to enhance the contrast, for example using0 "levels" in post-processing.

I wish the image wasn't so washed out. Had this been exposed properly I would have scored it a 9. The expression is terrific.

Looks a bit overexposed to me and need crop on left to eliminate extra arm.
