Barn Owl Hunting.
Taken in the fields near my parents house.
This was the first time I had really got to use my 100-400 lens, other than a few test shots. I started at a lower ISO setting but the light was not great as the sun was getting quite low, at this point the owl was probably 400 meters away, but I could see that with the slower shutter speed I was getting a lot of motion blur on the wings. I knew that by pushing the ISO up I would introduce noise, but was decided it was a compromise I would make. Looking back I think ISO 1600 would have been the best option, but I didn't want to risk blurring the motion if I got a good close-up shot. This was the last shot I got of him. I took it as he was flying towards me, but then he spotted me and flew off.
As for PP of the picture, I adjusted the levels, removed the noise from the sky (but not the owl) and also added the slight pink graduation to enhance the sunset. The picture was not cropped, just resized for my profile.
For those of you that are interested a 100% crop of the original can be found here
The owl visits the fields behind my parents’ house most nights when the weather is good. Some nights he flies back and fourth across the fields for quite a long time, some nights he just pays a quick visit.
My Brother and Parents named and refer to the owl as Oswald.
It's great to watch him.

It is a remarkably beautiful owl, and as others said, great shot at ISO 3200! |

A remarkable shot and lovely bird. It's interesting to see the performance of the camera and lens at that ISO and Tv. |
