This is a macroshot of a dead bee (or is it a wasp?) laying on top of a glass table, while my finger is beneath the glass.

I really thought this should have gotten in the top three. Great photo!

Thanks for all the comments and votes.

Well, like some of you already noticed, the bee is dead. It's lying on top of a sheet of glass while my finger is below the glass. No bee training and no risk of being stung :)

It wasn't my goal to make a perfectly sharp macrophoto of a bee, but a balanced photo that shows the tension between the bee and the fingertip. I made a shot on which the bee is perfectly in focus but I didn't like it because it took all of the viewers attention to the bee only.

After reading the comments about it, I did a try-out with a blue background but it didn't look too well because the blue didnít match witch the color of the finger. I think blue would look better though if it would be a bright colored flower instead of a finger.

Don't worry Swashbuckler, the bee killed itself :). It was trying to escape trough a closed window and bees seem to keep trying to escape until they die (BTW before I get any complaints, there was no way I could save the it. The window can't be opened and the bee was acting pretty aggressive so I didn't dare to catch it).

I just came to my mind that it actaully might be possible to do a shot like this with a living bee by putting honey on my finger. I donít think Iím gonna try it though :)

Amazing clarity. Great Composition.
07/21/2002 08:58:00 PM
This seems like a pretty good shot, but I am wondering if you have a Bee Circus. :)~ I think I I would have chopped more off the top.

Good use of a dead/frozen bee. Would have given this top mark but for what I see as a few small flaws. First the focus isn't quite where it needs to be -- the bee is a little out of focus. Second, while I really like the simple background, I wish it was some other color that could accentuate the bee and fingertip. Finally, the bee looks dead because the antennas are hanging down. (Hopefully I'm not being ignorant and bee antennas do hang down -- if they do, well, I messed up.) Very clever idea though.
07/21/2002 01:16:00 PM
is the bee trained? great level of detail.
07/20/2002 10:05:00 PM
great shot
07/20/2002 06:52:00 PM
great stopped motion but the fingers a bit distracting and the background is a bit bland
07/20/2002 04:55:00 PM
the macro shots are always realy cool. I can't believe this shot
07/19/2002 03:50:00 PM

An extremely difficult shot. Its can be improved upon, fewer reflections, sharper image, better contract with background, etc. But Im still giving it a 10. Did you refridgerate it or use a dead bee at all?
07/19/2002 04:17:00 AM
such great detail
07/19/2002 02:51:00 AM
wow.. how did u manage to get this photo?
07/19/2002 01:10:00 AM
Ouch.
07/18/2002 09:50:00 PM
I think your bee be dead
07/18/2002 09:40:00 PM
Great shot. Is the bee actually moving or is this setup with a dead bee on glass? A friend of mine thought it might be since there is no motion trail. Either way, I'm very impressed and gave you a 10. Let us know how you did it.
07/18/2002 04:12:00 PM
this is awesome. did you just spend all week sitting there with a camera on the off-chance a bee would land on your finger?? ;) great capture. looking fwd to finding out how you did this. my top 5 this week. -- gr8photos (10)
07/18/2002 02:37:00 PM
How youd do that??????
07/18/2002 01:54:00 PM

07/18/2002 12:38:00 PM

07/18/2002 02:32:00 AM
Awesome! Just simply perfect!
07/17/2002 10:20:00 PM
Flawless. Not very appealing to me since I'm not much into macro photography. Perfect execution however and deserves high rating. 8 from me.
07/17/2002 08:03:00 PM
Perfect timing =)

07/17/2002 04:19:00 PM
What a stunning shot! It's amazing that the bee came out so clearly... Great work!
07/17/2002 02:36:00 PM
Wow great stop action and very well lit. you should do a "how I did that" shot expose on this one.
07/17/2002 02:28:00 PM
wow.. can you say "stop motion" Very cool.
07/17/2002 02:16:00 PM
Excellent capture, and closer than I would want to get. I like the simplicity of this shot. karmat
07/17/2002 12:53:00 PM
Amazing photograph! Excellent composition -- and almost impossible to imagine how you would freeze this action. Is it a dead bee sitting on glass? One of the best photographs this week -- great job! 10 (LanSnake)
07/17/2002 10:52:00 AM
NICE catch! Did it hurt? ha ha
07/17/2002 10:50:00 AM
EXTREMELY INTERESTING....... WONDERFUL. lOVE THE COMPOSITION AND BALANCE TOO.... NEAR PERFECT
07/17/2002 09:06:00 AM

07/16/2002 09:46:00 PM
I think I can see the stinger
07/16/2002 06:50:00 PM
this rocks! i don't like my bee shot anymore...;) 10--amitchell
07/16/2002 03:13:00 PM
slightly unoriginal.
07/16/2002 12:41:00 PM
Now there is a different bee photo! ;-)
Nicely done stop motion, sharp image, and good exposure. One of my top picks this week.
07/16/2002 12:14:00 PM
A little too much space at the top,but this is great!!!
07/16/2002 12:07:00 PM
Wow, this is so much better than my bee shot from last week, but there is NO way this puppy is alive. Wing speed vs. Digital cam shutter speed alone. So, how did you do this? Normally, bees completely fold up their legs when dead. Stephan will be mad if you killed this bee for the shot (don't tell him). 10 Swash
07/16/2002 02:32:00 AM
how in the world did you get this shot? jeepers, I'm impressed. I would reccomend converting it to black and white, though, to get rid of the pink in the finger, and toning down the brightness just a tad.
07/16/2002 01:15:00 AM
Super-fast shutter?
07/16/2002 12:32:00 AM
good timing...
07/15/2002 11:45:00 PM
Bee in flight is cool...but your background is really dull. Sorry...imagine how much more the colors would pop on a light blue background. Too much dead space on the top too. 6 Lisa
07/15/2002 11:09:00 PM
Excellent, I wonder how you were able to capture the bee, unless it wasn't alive or flying
07/15/2002 08:38:00 PM
I'm not sure what to feel about this photo! It kind of creeps me out.
07/15/2002 05:53:00 PM
Great capture. Don't tell me you spent all week training a bee ;-)
I assume that by the lack of motionin the wings that the bee is mounted. Great effect "9" Dogman;-)
07/15/2002 04:36:00 PM
Wow - you must be a bee charmer. I can't imagine how you got this shot. I'm so impressed! 10!
07/15/2002 03:38:00 PM
OuCHiE !
07/15/2002 02:04:00 PM
Great catch! Top 5.
07/15/2002 01:15:00 PM
nice... but is the bee alive? why are the wings not moving?
07/15/2002 01:15:00 PM
Excellent.
07/15/2002 11:31:00 AM
NIce Picture, and nice timing. MJ 6
07/15/2002 10:50:00 AM

07/15/2002 08:07:00 AM
Super!
07/15/2002 04:51:00 AM
Creative scan and clever idea. Kee
07/15/2002 01:20:00 AM
Very cool... it must have taken a LOT of shots to get this picture just right!
