Challenge: Window Framed (Advanced Editing IV)
Collection: Challenge Outcasts
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Location: My tropical garden. Caloundra, Qld. Austraia
Date: Apr 22, 2006
Galleries: Architecture, Floral
Date Uploaded: Apr 22, 2006

I went out of the box re this image, as I only have aluminium windows everywhere around here.

I went visiting the salvage yards, and was successful in picking up an old QUEENSLANDER window frame, with patterned textured colored glass with five panels.

I now had the tools to work with, so hunted out a suitable position in my tropical garden to take the shot.

Firstly I had a job to do, as my painted cracked and peeled window, was completly intact, except it had warped quite a lot. I laid the window frame flat down on as couple of blocks, to lift it off the ground by 4 to 6 inches. Under this I had a plastic sheet, to catch the broken glass.

I also had my goggles on, to protect my eyes, as I am very close to the ground re my height. I then had so much fun dropping a good size solid rock through the center glass panel, to make a jagged hole.

I then set my portable window frame up, with a beautiful flowering orchid, peeking through the hole.

Then all I had to do, was shot the images.

This is the result.....After the competition I will upload my outtakes, re this image for you to see.....

I agree with posthumous! I love this photo! Definitely should have scored higher! I gave it a 10!

a perfectly respectable score but you deserved higher. I gave you an 8 for a dynamic, exciting, colorful & fun shot. The leaf over the corner of the frame is a great finishing touch.

Nice but I would have removed that leaf in the lower left corner, it´s way to much of an attention stealer. Also the shot is a bit bright for my taste, would have liked it more about 1/2 stop darker. Awesome window though, really like the setup.

Looks too unreal for my taste. Too many colours and textures which hurts my eyes.

In some ways I like this, and in others, it is hard on the eyes. I like the idea and composition, but i think it's a bit over sharpend or oversaturated. Either way, it's hard to pick the plant out of the glass, which is what bothers me.

Interesting composition. I like the cropping, textures, and color of this picture. I would have liked to see a less busy plant (maybe a solid colored tulip or something like that) because the varigated leaves and spotted petals compete with the texture of the broken glass and weathered wood frame. Still, it is a very good effort.

Seems over sharpened or saturated. I might cropped more to the right also.

Wow, that is stunning. Did you set this up or did you find it? Doesn't matter, it's a great shot with a clever title. Good luck.

The contrast seems a little off on this image
It is very busy but fits the challenge and I like the detail

might have been better from one side so we can see the flowers actually coming out of the window

Good idea! The leaf in the lower left may add compositionally but in a way is jarring, since it doesn't seem connected to the plant in the center.

Really great idea! I'm finding the pattern on the glass and on the orchids to be a little bit of sensory overload. I wonder how this would look with reduced sharpness or with either the plants or glass having less complexity. Love the weathered window frame and the old latch.

Oh yes!!! This is AWESOME! I love the old, old broken down contrast with the vivid, beautiful green and colorful life breaking out of the glass. Wonderful execution of a great idea!!!!

Cool colors but just a bit too much texture going on. Feels too busy.

This is such a potentially brilliant image it breaks my heart that the lighting is so harsh that you've lost contrast and detail. That window frame, with it's peeled paint, the dimpled glass and the fabulous flowers sticking through make a wonderful composition, but it needs more depth. I'd maybe pin back that odd leaf on the left side as well.

I give this a + for being the only challenge entry with a broken window frame to give character to the subject. The old frame also adds a lot of feeling to the image....10
