Challenge: The Future (Classic Editing*)
Camera: Canon PowerShot G2
Location: Watts Bar Nuclear Power Plant
Date: Aug 1, 2003
Date Uploaded: Aug 4, 2003

My boyfriend and I took a drive one evening specifically to take pics of this plant. It's actually a lovely spot with lots of people night fishing along the shore.
The 15 second exposure didn't help the focus and noise any, but I still think it looks pretty cool.

If anyone's interested in the plant, here's some info...This is a pressurized water nuclear reactor in Spring City, Tennessee. Construction began in 1973, and the first unit finally went on line in 1996 at a cost of almost $8 billion. Construction of the second unit was halted. Watts Bar 1 was the last commercial nuclear reactor to go on line in North America.
The Tennessee Valley Authority, which operates the plant, was approved last year to produce tritium along with power for its consumers . Tritium is a radioactive gas that boosts the explosive power of hydrogen bombs and is an essential material in US nuclear weapons. Separating commercial and military uses of nuclear energy has been an important aspect of nonproliferation efforts in the world. This decision marks the first time that a civilian, commercial plant is being used to help produce weapons for the military.
According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, over the next 20 years, there is a 45% chance of a meltdown accident at a nuclear power plant in the United States. In 1992, TVA released a study rating Watts Bar with the highest probability of a core meltdown accident of any plant in the United States. Living only 50 miles from this plant is a bit disconcerting.

I've been wondering why I have never seen a long exposure of a nuke power plant. I was waiting to get one when I go back to the states. (We only have one here, in sydney). This is nicely done, and very well composed. The hazy light on the horizon is perfect. Very nice photo for any challenge (although it might not need the border). 8

I love the reflection of the red lights. I wish the towers were not so soft. Though I couldn't tell you if/how to pull that off.
