Challenge: In the Garden (Classic Editing)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Redwood Forest
Date: Jul 25, 2003
Aperture: f/8.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/6th sec
Galleries: Nature, Travel
Date Uploaded: Jul 29, 2003

Taken in a grove of Coastal Sequoia (Redwoods) on a misty, summer morning along the Northern California coast of the USA.

I wanted to convey the enormous size of these trees by including people in the image. They cooperatively wore primary colors. :)

Coastal Sequoias are the largest trees on Earth reaching a maximum height of 367 feet. This grove has trees that are 200-300 feet tall. (75-100 meters)

Some voters felt since it was not a backyard garden that it did not meet the challenge and voted accordingly.

Personally, I thought it matched the topic better.

A stunning example of how a photograph really can transmit a feeling of actually being there. This is impressive and humbling, and I'd dearly love to see those for real. Top shot.

Another picture that takes me back. I used to live in Eureka CA for a while too. My mother lives in a small little town inbetween Redding and Eureka ( Big Bar) I used to play in these parts as a young girl. Love the picture!!

I can't imagine how anyone could vote 1's-3's. this is a beautiful contrast of mist and green,a good composition and the people on the path really show the tallness of the trees. This was a 10 from me and I would have given you a 10 without the people.

They didn't seem that big unitil the perspective of the people.

I love that you had people present to accentuate just how tall these trees are and the mist adds a kind of mysterousness to the forest.

impressive shot, I really like it!.... but it doesn't really meet the challenge, it makes not me think to the garden at all

Very nice. I'd prefer it without the slight tilt.

Great shot...I love the originality of it. Bumped it from 8 to 9.
What really makes this pic - the splash of color from the people, the foggy trees in the background, the composition, DOF.......
The only thing I might have changed would be to rotate it a touch to the left to bring the trees a drop straighter.

Great shot - I think though I'd like to see the it tilted to the left a fraction: the only thing to giive any guide to horizontal/vertical, given the convergence of the tree-trunks, is where the people are: I'm sure it would actually be inaccurate to reality, but it would not have the oddness of the feeling of wanting to tilt my head whilst looking at this shot.

Ah, thank you for the nostalgic visit. I can almost smell the misty forest air. Great idea to include the strolling people for relational perspective.

In lieu of words... > 8

Ps: The inclusion of the two aliens (red and blue) not only provides a good size reference but also an apt visual anchor.

The fog in this shot is great, as is the shot in general, I would have liked it more without the people though--just my opinion, would of had a more lonely feel, they seem to distract from the beauty around them.

I love photos like this. The fog makes some beautiful photos when the photographer is in tune with it :) I like to think of 'fog' as an assistant to the photographer. It, in some way, makes you more like a painter and helps you start out with a 'clean' canvas. Along with that notion, you have done a nice job by placing the 'walkers' in this scene. They serve two purposes here. They put the size of these giant trees into perspective. They also provide that 'serendipity' element that always seems to work nicely when used effectively. They really become the subject of the photo, even though they are only a very small part of it. I love the red jacket... it's really eye catching in this photo.

The wide angle view is definitely the only way to go here. It helps pronounce the vastness of this landscape. This particular image also shows a good example of 'perspective distortion'. When you look at these trees, the outer trees seem to be leaning inwards. This is a distortion caused when the film plane (digital sensor) is not parallel to the subjects. Your camera is slightly angled upwards and creating this distortion. In your case, there is no way to 'correct' this with the camera. This is where the medium and large format cameras come in handy :)

Excellent photo... Kudos :) = 10
