Yes, it's a Bonsai.

There are multiple things that could be contrasting here. The age of the clovers and the age of the tree, the light difference between the tree and the BG, the naturalness of the tree contrasted with the unnatural white of the BG.

For me, the contrast is between the "object" and the "space" around it. Emptiness vs. Form. Hence the title "Zen".

Hope people get this.

Thanks for the great comments!

I thought of a better title for this about three days after I submitted - "Time & Space". Oh well.. I'm happy with its placement.

p.s. Jason, it's about 2ft high and about 18 years old. The clovers are about 5 days old.

Beautiful, reminds me of Sumi, which definitely deals with contrast.

Is this one of those bonzai trees? Good idea, the black and white was a good choice, the contrasts are much clearer.

I'm guessing the "contrast" is simply in the texture of the tree, and maybe the tree against the white background as well. Either way, I like this shot very much. Composition leads the eye throughout the photo, the black and white works well, and I do like the "high key" approach. This looks like a bonsai - (I really adore those, though cannot keep them alive) - great choice of subject.

Very high key--I'd like to see this a bit darker, but the lines and composition are wonderful.

i love the high key of this shot, and i've always been partial to old twisty trees :) the top of the trunk might be a bit *too* dark though considering the tones of the rest of the shot. Good job nonetheless. 8

I can't vote on this challenge, but if I could, this would be a 10 from me. Beautiful framing, composition and theme. I don't see a single thing about it I don't like. Nicely done.

I'd like to see more black midtones in the tree.

Nice bonsai! Grow them myself. The bleached background adds much to the shot without actually overexposing the main subject. It's a striking image, although I would perhaps have cropped out the pot since the illusion of a normal sized tree is slightly lost. [7]

Contrasted with what? This is an unfortunately common mistake with this challenge - it wasn't about the photographic quality of contrast but about the compositional one. Another good shot though.
