Challenge: Country Life II (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Nikon D50
Lens: Sigma 100-300mm f/4.5-6.7 DL for Nikon
Location: Edgewood, NM
Date: Feb 8, 2006
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 30 seconds
Galleries: Science and Technology, Astrophotography
Date Uploaded: Feb 8, 2006

M42 (Orion Nebula)and a hint of M43, photographed on a tracking mount with 30 second exposure, 100mm lens at f/5.6. I don't know what the streak is in the lower right quadrant, possibly an orbiting satellite.
Adjusted levels, curves, and unsharp mask. Cropped from much larger image and resized for web. In camera noise reduction turned on, but red channel noise is still evident. Extensive use of curves revealed more detail than I expected from this short exposure.

Wow....this has everything to do with country life....I live in the city and can't even begin to see a star. When I go out to the "country" it looks like a million tiny flashlights.

I agree with ElGordo and kahtava. This is an image that deserved a much better reception than it seems to have gotten. It is a beautiful shot and a great take on this challenge.

People who live in the country appriciate the beauty of the night skies more then city-folk who don't get to see the stars on a clear night. Great Picture!

There is a DQ request on this image, suspicions confirmed that the average DPC voter is abysmally ignorant of astronomy and what it means to have clear, country skies. I live in the country because of these clear skies. It is rare to encounter anyone that lives in the country that does not appreciate the beautiful, unpolluted views of the heavens.

Clever take on the challenge! Most city-folk don't get to see and appreciate things like this! Well done!

wonderful shot of the nebula, but I believe it stretches the challenge a bit.

As George Bush Sr. once said "not gonna do it". I think that holds true with this picture it's "not gonna do it". Im not sure what this picture is, is it stars???
