Greetings from the Critique Club

YOu must have had fun desaturating this image. And you were certainly on the right track to emphasize the pupil of the eye in this fashion.

If this was hanging in the Museum of Modern Art, the patrons would be ooh-ing and aaah-ing over it. (Me too.) But, no, it's in DPChallenge where the voters frequently want more realism, and symmetry. So you scored in the lower numbers.

I suppose, for DPC, if you had made the color of the eyes more 'normal' and used a more conventional composition, you'd have scored a bit higher. But would you have been happier? Doubt it.

So, what the heck. I certainly think you know what you're doing. As long as the numbers don't bother you, keep on doing your photography that way and let those of us who appreciate your work continue to do so.

Good luck.

The image also suffers from "lack of wow factor" that most DPCers are looking for in an image. The main "subject" also doesn't fall under the rules of thirds which is important in images. Eye shots are difficult and it takes trial and error to perfect. I've tried a few eye shots and had some success with them. Maybe it's something that you can try to reshoot again and see what other folks think about it.

The important thing is to keep on trying and experimenting.

I believe one of the issues on this image is the colors. The color of the eye and skin seems unnatural too me. Just my opinion. I like the composition and the way you cropped the image. Maybe the nose could have been taken out?

Relies to much on post-editing IMO (selective desat, unnatural blue of the eye). For me,this shot has become rather ubiquitous for DPC. I think it would have been more effective to keep the tight cropping and eliminate the selective desat. The natural color of the eyes was likely striking enough against the more neutral tones of skin and hair. On a final note, the nose is a bit of a focal grabber for me. It seems to loom hugely in the lower portion of the frame.

compelling to me

Nice macro. I like the detail and focus here. IMHO I would have liked to see a tighter shot/more crop on the eye to weight it heavier in the composition. Just my humble opinion, nice shot nonetheless

Another eye image, but would have liked it to have been cropped a little tighter, just the eye area, as I don't like looking up the girls nose.
