Here is an edited version.
IMO the bg was too bright and drew attention away.
Selected the bright parts (Ctrl+Alt+~), copied to new layer, set the layer to multiply. Brought back the animal with some dodging. Added some velvia color, added some contrast and added some sharpening. |

I agree with alexgarcia, although perhaps I'd take the levels adjustment just a tad farther. A little bit of sharpening works well, too, although I'm sure that some of the apparent softness here comes from the downsizing. |

Nice portrait. I agree with ShutterPug.
IMO is a little bit "washed", maybe you should play a bit with levels to make the photo a little more contrasted in midtones. I made a quick post-editing of it (hope you didn't mind).
