Challenge: Speed (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: Manly Beach - Sydney

Shutter: 1/800

Taken at Manly beach in Sydney. Surf was up and lots of people out on their boards.
Unfortunately didn't have a zoom lens to capture them up close too well, but used 6MP mode and a lot of cropping and noise reduction to get the image as clean as I could.

I'm not sure that would have worked here - don't think it was oversharpening, but more likely noise removal.
But without the noise removal, the photo was pretty ghastly

Can I ask if you used a tripod/monopod?

It was taken with a tripod. The surf was breaking in one particular direction, so it was easy to set it up pointing at one spot where the surfers were going to travel past

Actually, I have to thank the S602's burst shot mode to take 5 pics at a time - otherwise I probably wouldn't have got this :)

man you really did have to crop in quite a bit. i had to do the same sorta thing with my picture also. however, not nearly as much. nice job, i had you scored with someone else (not the winner, and not even close either) for my highest this week.

Congrats on your ribbon. Love the color of the water. It really does show speed. Great shot!

Didn't expect this to go so well...
Marbo and Bil99 were the only ones that seemed to pick up on it, but this was cropped from a 6MP image taken on my fuji S602 and the image size pixel for pixel was about 1:1, so the image was seriously noisy (yep it ain't getting much bigger than what's displayed without further image degredation). Had to use NeatImage to help clean it up. As such, I really didn't like the way it affected the water, so didn't think this would do so well.
This was taken at Manly beach the day after what is known as a "weather bomb" caused huge seas off the coast of Sydney. We had huge waves rolling on to the beaches. I fired off about 150 shots, most of which were dreadful - I had 3 choices that I felt conveyed speed, but this was my favourite.
Thanks for the very appreciated comments :)
By the way - here's the original image (resized to 640x480), so you can see how much I had to crop to get this

Very nice action shot...speed is conveyed, and due to the centering, the ocean is emphasized for speed...good work!

Great action. A little sharper on the surfer would have added the WOW.

Too good to be true - is this really a DPC rules photo? I'd like to see a larger size of it after the challenge.

Looks like something like neat image was used too much and ruined the water

A very good action shot, with the lighting and the tones of the water and the spray just right.

I really like this picture, it coveys motion and movement. It makes you wonder will he fall off? The balance of the picture is good my eye travels along the wave, though the surfer and on to the surf.
