I like the contrast of metals, woods, organics...

*Salut from the Critique Club!*

I noticed this is your first challange photo. First off, welcome to DPC. Enjoy the ride, and I hope you find this site as wonderful as I do.

Now, the picture.

Excellent first challenge entry!

Few things I did notice

First, subject matter - You've chosen a nice subject. Lots of people have soft spots for the old bug (myself included) and you've not only found a nice nostalgic collection, they are in different colours as well. Definitely a neat collection, so the challenge was fulfilled quite nicely.

Now, I noticed you got quite a few comments about the date stamp. It is true that here at DPC, there is a rule that states no text on pictures. In this case, it seems to have been overlooked, but be forearned, in the future, it will not be tolerated and you're picture may be DQ'ed which is never fun.

Composition - I also noticed some of your comments regarded how centered this picture is. Next time you take pictures for a challenge, try putting your subject in different parts of the frame, not just the center, and see how it looks. The rule of thirds is a handy tool to create a dynamic to your picture without doing anything else.

I'm not sure if you did any post processing to your pictures. I would suggest tweaking the colors and sautration a bit. The colors in the picture in general are a bit flat, which detracts from the picture. Some levels or curves and a slight boost in color saturation will help make the colours more vibrant, adding more dimension to the picture.

You're off to a good start! Keep taking pictures, and if you have any question, feel free to pm me.

Cheers!

slug bug! where's my sister when i need her?? : )
in terms of composition, there are lots of interesting lines and angles in these cars. i think that a closer shot of them, perhaps taken at unexpected angles, could really add some visual excitement to this photo.

Great! Great! Great! Love it. It's the best.

hmmm date stamp is a nice touch (not)
12/04/2005 02:02:47 PM
nice datestamp there

Great color contrast. I like the wood in the background, but the rest of the background gets a little too busy.

I like the humor. I'm willing to bet most comments will complain about the date stamp being distracting.

Great subject and fitting title.

Nice pciture and idea but the date in the corner is realy ditracting from the whole concept
12/01/2005 11:48:10 PM
who's driving them?
12/01/2005 08:27:53 PM
There's some potential here but the cars should be further down near the bottom third of the frame, i.e. "rule of thirds". There are some situations where breaking the rule might work, but I don't think this is one of them. The centered composition here lacks interest. I'd also suggest a viewpoint further to the left so that the barn could form a consistent background across the entire photo as the weathered wood fits in nicely with the feel of neglect. Finally, the date in the lower right just plain needs to go.
12/01/2005 01:03:02 PM
If you can, I would suggest turning off the date fucntion. The bright yellow date draws away from the subject. Also a little out of focus.

i have a coworker that refuses to turn off the date stamp on her camera.... drives me up a wall...
12/01/2005 07:16:44 AM
I like this shot but could do without the date at the bottom and it seems a bit flight. Maybe brighten it up just a tad.
12/01/2005 05:42:16 AM
I can't belive that you didn't at least crop the date away!! Good idea of objects but ....!!
12/01/2005 01:33:39 AM
would have score higher if the date stamp wasn't there
11/30/2005 11:46:17 PM
I suppose your if your collection is broken down beetles, three is already well started for a colllection, after all not everyone has more than one of those. I like your concept, makes me wonder what woulda happened if you went to a junkyard and tried this. That date below will keep you from doing well this challenge, but it looks like your technique is good.
11/30/2005 09:27:24 PM
love the subject but the dates just a tad distracting. after the challenge i would clone it out, too bad this is basic editing....nice job!

Man. . . For some reason, I just LOVE this one. Course, it might be a little better without the date (but I'm sure you are hearing that a time or two). It's just a very interesting picture in an interesting scene. 9

you have to remove the date!!!
maybe crop a bit more? I'm wondering if there was not a better angle so you would have more of the cars and less of the grass and barn in view...
I like the idea of the picture though!
11/30/2005 09:43:41 AM
Learn more about your camera, (turn off the date, and turn up your resolution) and how to process your images (this one is a little over compressed) Just cropping the date off the bottom of this would have gotten it a better score.

This is a good shot, the only problems are technical. I love your collection of lawn ornaments ;)
11/30/2005 02:22:03 AM
I'm guessing this won't be DQ'd because it wasn't shot during the challenge dates, but... :(

Otherwise, a 5
11/30/2005 01:55:13 AM
Date stamp is not allowed here. I/m afraid you'll be disqualified.
11/30/2005 01:45:28 AM
eh.. a bit overprocessed, and the date stamp .. gosh that sucks that it's there. This would've been an awesome picture.

The date on your camera is destracting you should get rid of that.

This has some really great potential for this challenge. I might have tried to get a little closer to the cars. The date should go.

Writing on photo. The date. This will be dq'd. No need to vote. I owned one of those though. It was one of my favorite cars!
