Mother raises 9 children, only 4 of whom are hers. The others are either orphans after the tsunami disasters, or kids whose parents have had to go overseas to find jobs after the disaster took everything they had. Because mother wasn't directly affected by the tsunami -- and because NGOs' fund-raising campaigns are often very specifically worded, and because many public donors are under-educated about charitable giving and give not because they think it is a responsibility, but rather because they were "moved" by one disaster or another -- mother isn't qualified to get tsunami aid.

To those who commented on the eyes, there was no processing done on them. I just adjusted colors and contrast values, and then USMed a little bit. Thanks anyway, though.

Maybe I should have neatimaged the bejeezus out of it. NOT.

Thanks for the comments. No processing on the eyes. I wonder why some would specifically mention them as if they're strange, or something.

Another favorite from this challenge that has been under-rated. Dang!

Awesome colors and composition. The child is so pure looking and the adult looks like she does not know what may happen next but there appears to be a glint of hope in her eye under her look of apparent disappointment. Would like to see what you wrote about. Very well done.

The eyes seem overdone to me.

Great candid expressions and effective post processing. I like how the woman's forearm acts like a frame, and leads one's eyes up her arm to her face.

Very very nice image. I like the close crop, how the child looks directly in the camera and is clearly the focus, yet the mother is also there and also in focus, but looking away. Great colors and expressions, too. Congratulations on a wonderful shot!
