Hello Cora,
I've pulled your image to critique and will do my best to offer suggestions as to what I would have done. I am by no means a professional photog and still learning myself so these are just observations of what I might have done hope you can find something helpful.
I scored this image a 6 mainly for 2 reasons, as one of the commenters noted the white tree in the background is a bit distracting. What if you shifted your position so that the background colors to the right of the tree are the only back drop for the leaves in the foreground.
The second reason was also noted in the comments regarding the grain appearing added and may have corrected itself if you have just the background colors to the right. It would make the image darker with no light areas to affect the grain. I don't know how many manual settings you have to work with on the Canon PowerShot but it sure captures color beatifully. If you can make manual adjustments in the PowerShot maybe just one f-stop would enhance the grain.
I disagree with the comment that grainy images should be dark or b/w I think this image is a beautiful example of grain enhancing the beauty of nature. Maybe just shifting the angle of view.
Beautiful Colors in this image and your position of the leaves in the composition is perfect.
Will watch for your next entry if you have any questions please don't hesitate to pm me. Best Regards, Michele

white item (tree?) too distracting -- colors muted for an overall pleasing effect |

This is a nice photo. However, It leaves me wondering whether or not the grain really enhanced the image. To me, grain works best in photos that are dark, contrasty or moody, or to provide an "aged" look. This seems to me like a good image that had grain added to it for a contest, rather than an image that was enhanced by the use of grain. Keep shooting! :) |
