Is it cold where you are? it has been 90 degrees here all week :) - jmsetzler

85 - 90 degrees the evening this was shot plus real fire in fireplace and a 250 watt photo spot made life very uncomfortable for both of the models and the photographer. The first sitting had camera motion blur, the second sitting cost me dearly in paybacks.

is that a pen?
Actualy it is a paring knife, anything larger would have been to big because I wanted to maintain the sharpness of the shadow.

Thank you all for the comments.

Creative shot. A little violent.... is that a pen? The pen is mighter than the sword...... hmmm.
06/23/2002 11:17:00 PM
Good book

The small sharp object in comparison to the LARGE hand just doesn't make it believable. Otherwise a great idea.
06/23/2002 03:42:00 AM
Good for a laugh
06/22/2002 09:58:00 PM
good idea but very pourely artistic work
06/22/2002 11:42:00 AM
Eeek. And all that while reading Patricia Cornwell no less. Those books are violent enough even w/out threatening shadows! It's a great idea to incorporate the shadow into your picture. Like the fire in the background, even though it is creating some hotspots, it does set the mood.

Nice creativity!

Now, this picture tells a story. :-) Good use of shadow. Very well focused, and very crisp. Did you try it in black and white (just out of curiosity?)

Very nicely done. I can almost read along with her! The fire in the background is an excellent touch. A scary story told in a single picture. Bravo!

Nice! Draws the viewer in, with the various elements. I am wondering many things when I look at this photo. Does the reader know what is about to happen? What kind of a book is the person reading? Makes good use of shadows.

so dark so evil.......i like it
06/19/2002 08:57:00 AM
Great job on the shadow; very dark in the center.

I guess he/she's about the be stabbed. Interesting, dramatic idea.
06/18/2002 10:41:00 PM
Good concept, but I feel the lighting could be better. Interesing choice of book. :)
06/18/2002 09:46:00 PM
This reminds me of when I would see something like this in a movie and I wanted to scream...Lady !!! Get up !!! There's a man behind you with a knife !!!!

GREAT idea..well composed !!!!!!
06/18/2002 08:45:00 PM
This is pretty cool. I love the fire in the background and the shadow is great.
06/18/2002 08:22:00 PM
sick---very sick---but good-10
06/18/2002 05:00:00 PM
Nice idea and great composition but I think you should have used a bigger knife (or a smaller hand :))though. At first I thought it was the shadow of the hand of the women holding a pen.
06/18/2002 11:35:00 AM
Very creative! Even have the creepy Patricia Cornwall book ;-)
06/18/2002 09:35:00 AM
ha ha

Nice idea. I might have used a bigger knife to show the concept faster. Original concept and formatting is well done. Good lighting over a large area of people and things. Excellent overall exposure mixture.
06/17/2002 09:50:00 PM
Aahhh!
06/17/2002 09:40:00 PM
Good storytelling in a fun way. It did take me a moment to get this one because of lack of definition in the knife shadow. I was also distracted by the fire. It would be better if the fire were more out of focus and the knife more clearly defined.
06/17/2002 09:18:00 PM
Ooooh, cool concept! Nicely done! I think (if possible) a little less light on the shoulder and head of the person sitting would have bee a little better, but I imagine that might have been tough to do.
06/17/2002 07:07:00 PM
chilling!
06/17/2002 06:46:00 PM
I was going to do a hangman's noose, no rope, old movie conscept I like it
06/17/2002 06:10:00 PM
good FOV
06/17/2002 06:09:00 PM
Creative.
06/17/2002 06:07:00 PM
spooky! ... but creative.
06/17/2002 05:03:00 PM
good idea, maybe lighting producing shadow too strong - dropping gamma down to 0.5 works well.
06/17/2002 04:58:00 PM
very creative. I wish there wasn't such harsh light on the person
06/17/2002 04:01:00 PM
LOL......Great job, well well done. LOVE it!!
06/17/2002 03:39:00 PM
Nice interpretation of the theme, and good framing too.
06/17/2002 01:45:00 PM
cool use of shadows
06/17/2002 01:37:00 PM
heh

Somehow this feels fake to me. Even if she is looking towards the fire, she will more than likely see the shadow on the pages in her peripheral vision. I realize that this could be an instant in time before she notices the shadow, but then, I would have to suggest that there be "some" kind of motion, or reaction taking place in the image.
