Challenge: Coffee Shop (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Cafe Bassam--Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego
Date: Oct 1, 2005
Galleries: Candid, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Oct 2, 2005

Something (or, in this case, someone) you would find in a coffee shop:
As founder and editor of "The Espresso", John Rippo is the quintessential regular at the 380+ coffee shops, houses, and other coffee purveyors located throughout San Diego County. Hanging out at coffee joints is part of his job. (Wish I had that job!)

For over ten years, "The Espresso" (Read It! Drink It!) has been San Diego's Cafe and Coffeehouse Newspaper. Thanks, John, for taking the time to be my model...now get back to work already! ; )

As for the picture: levels, curves, hue, saturation, lightness, and just a hint of contrast. Wish i could burn that window a bit, but not with basic editing rules...

Sorry I didn't have time to comment during the challenge itself. Nice work.

I gave you a 7 for this one. It would have been one of my favourites in the challenge but it had two "faults" (personal opinion only) which bothered me. One is that the subject of the picture is a bit too soft for my liking, my preference would be to see him a little sharper. The other is that I don't see any benefit in tilting the camera. I always knock a point off for that ;)

The burnt out window, crockery and table top just add to the atmosphere.

Hi Jeannele :) I think this image lacked the strong story behind it. From the looks of the comments below, people seem to be at a loss of what you're trying to convey. As far as the image is concerned, the horizon is a bit off so it's a tad distracting. There are blown highlights probably because this was shot during the day and the sun was beating down through the windows. It's really not a BW but a duotone. I think BW and a bump in the levels would make this image stand out a bit.

Why is he shrugging or gesturing like that? I feel like I'm missing the point on this one.

Harsher, less diffused light on the man's face and sharper focus would give this photo a big kick.

An instant in a café... doesn't it tilt to the left?

Nice photo. His face looks a little out of focus. Who's the girl at the counter? ;)

Hey, i know this guy! He's at every coffee shop I've ever been to. Is it just me, or do they all look the same?
