Taken in Central Park, NY, the scene is of the bottom half of a popular fountain pretty much in the center of the park. I was lucky enough to get a brief gust of wind to create the wave in the water droplets.

Convert to BW, Lvls, Burn background, Lvls, Dodge some highlights on the Statue, Lvls, USM, NI, Lvls, NI, done.

Took lots of playing/tweeking to get something satisfactory.

I really like this one. The droplets are very hard to capture for me. Great composition. I do agree that it might be a better shot as a landscape but the closeness of those cherubs would get lost. IMO thats what makes this shot so interesting.

Thanks to all for the comments:)

I must throw out this disclaimer: It looked a lot better before I shrunk it down to 640px. I submitted this image before i understood anything about workflow, and i unwittingly saved, saved, and resaved upon the same JPEG over and over w/ progressive dodge/burns, not knowing that it would KILL the quality, especially so when stepped down to a smaller scale.

Hello from the critique club,

I think you have an excellent idea here but it needed just a couple of compositional changes and you would have gained a much higher score.

If you were able to produce this image in a more landscape format I think it would have had much more impact. I'm just presuming the background on the left side continued to be dark out of the frame then it would have been nice to see every little bit of spray and droplet against the dark background that would have added a little negative space and given you more contrast to the water which is your theme area of high contrast.

By adding more dark space to the left you could have then cropped up higher at the bottom to the point where it would appear the the cherubs were standing on a rock. This then would have given a more balanced view and helped in obtaining that rule of thirds.

Some earlier comment have mentioned that the cherubs were a little soft in focus but I find that appealing in the sense that they are seen through a veil of water mist and are a mystical figure.

You could have added to the high contrast simply by gaining more interest in the water spray as mentioned in the composition changes above but also i would have not used neat-image this has softened the water and I feel to gain even further contrast you could have done a couple of simple adjustments before converting to B/W, these being (PS:CS) image - adjustment - selective color - use white channel - reduce black color by 60- 70%. This method works very simply and you would have no need to use levels the way you have, similiar effects can be achieved in shadow/highlight.

Overall you had a good image that finished with a good score but it could have scored much higher. The changes mentioned would have let you achieve some of that illusive "wow factor". Good luck with your future challenge entries and I hope you enjoy the site.

I like the composition and contrast area on the left hand side.

I like the concept here. Would love to see a slower shutter speed with the water streaming more, but it is high contrast and the crop is good.

Great use of stop-motion, I like all the particles of water. I also really like the deep black sky and compostion--an 8 from me.

I think this has an excellent idea behind it. There are multiple points of interest to be seen and the composition, in general, is very nice. I love the perspective, and I like your choice of black & white. There are a few areas that I think take away from the image a bit. First, it seems as though there's too MUCH sharpening, especially where the water droplets are, I'm not sure if this is the case or just the way the light hits them that makes it seem that way or not. Secondly is light. There isn't enough balance, in my opinion, of light in this photograph. The left side seems to nearly have too much - but if this was done by using natural sunlight, there might not have been much you could do about it. That said, I think the image would've been boosted if you had used some fill light on the left side to help bring out more of the details of the figures under the fountain. This might also help the softer focus on that area and tighten the image up. I also think this type of image would be enhanced with a nice simple border to give it a good finished look. Overall I gave a 6 not for technical aspects but because of the vision behind it and the potential.

Great shadows in this photo. I don't know if I see "high" but there's definitely contrast.

Love the water... Perhaps the cherubs could be a bit more pronounced but a minor issue for such a lovely image

Nice photo. I'm not fond of the clarity of the statue tho. I find it has a soft or OoF feel to it. I really like the way you have stopped the water tho and think that is very well done. Good luck in this challenge. <6>
