I think this is a nice candid image. I think there are a couple ways you could 'change' this photo. Whether or not it would improve it is totally subjective.

I would have either included more of the child on the left or cut him out completely. The eye position on that child is uncomfortably close to the edge of the frame. The child is also looking at something that is outside of the image, which creates some amount of tension.

Sometimes when I see a person I want to photograph, I will just watch them through my viewfinder for a few minutes and snap an occasional shot. You can't really plan for what may happen in the scene. It's a good idea to shoot a lot of photos and then sort out what you have. These types of photos are also very difficult to critique because of their candid nature.

Personally I'm very distracted by the yellow fabric around her head in the background. It looks like she has some kind of headdress on or something, even though I know that's not true.

I also think it's too soft... Her face should be in sharper focus, but that's just my preference. A lot of people like softer focus in portrats.

IMHO, the little boy is fine in the picture, it allows me to focus on the girl more because the boy is out of focus. I think it adds some artisitic element of focus and depth. But, I can see how it could be distracting to some people. Overall, a great warm image showing the girl's beauty and innocence

Its quite obvious the strongest element in this photo is the little girl, her beauty, the radience of her smile, and those BIG eyes. For me the little boy on the left is a weakness, a distracting element. So, if you could loose him ... :) I have to say coloration (skintone) is ethnocentric in this case, whatever pleases you, although the 'pink' in her lips seems very natural to me. As far as post processing, I won't muck with it, it has a nice softness now.
