I am totally baffled at why this photo would only score in the 5.6 range. I think if it had been in the silhouette challenge, you would be looking at the high 6's! I truly love it!

My daughter-in-law lived in New Zealand as a foreign exchange student a few years ago, and she and your gorgeous pictures have convinced me that we HAVE to go someday! It is so breathtaking!

Critique Club:

This certainly is high contrast and I think it met the challenge topic very well. There are a couple of things you could work on to make photos such as this even better.

1. Pay close attention to your horizon. While it's hard to tell here how level the horizon is by looking at the tops of the trees, you can tell that it's slightly off by looking at the water line.

2. The sillhouette os the clump of grass/reeds is very nice but it's so close to the center of the pic that it's competing with the sunset for my attention. Composing the shot with the grass in the corner would still give you some nice foreground interest but wouldn't be in the way of your sunset.

The color banding in the sky is kinda hard to avoid given the small file size we have to work with so there is often nothing you can do about that.

All in all, a very nice shot. Good luck in future challenges! :)

When this photo was taken Taupo was in the middle of a pollen explosion from the literally millions of thos damn pine trees in our region. It was that heavy that during the day you could clearly see a yellow green cloud of it and it actually obscured scenery at times, played hell with allergy sufferers and gave one hell of a good sunset that night, apart from the slight haze that it caused it was spectacular

Nice colours. Would prefer a longer exposure to get a smoother sea. 8.

Bumping up after second look, but find the centered bush a bit distracting.

The color transition in the sky is very poor. Probably caused by the JPEG conversion, but should have been avoided.

Beautiful tones! The sky is gorgeous. The foreground's color seems a bit off to me though - not sure why - and the horizon seems off a hair. Still a very nice appealing image.
