Greetings again from the Critique Club, Doug!

I believe this is my third time critiquing one of your pictures...either you're priviledged or you are cursed! :) I hope you find this helpful in any event.

Colour, Composition and Contrast:

Glass is inherently a difficult subject to photograph, but I like this vase a lot. You've chosen to centre the composition, which isn't normally my first choice, just out of fear of losing interest in the viewer. However, I think it works for this vase because of the way the flowers are painted on it. I like your choice of a neutral background, but I'm not sure I like the texture, I think it detracts from the elegance of the vase. This is only a minor point though.

I would have liked more of the other colours in the vase to be prominent though, maybe a longer exposure as autool suggested?

Focus and lighting:

I adore the way this is lit. I think the glow through the vase and illumination of the flowers is lovely. The light is in the centre, allowing the top and bottom of the frame to be a bit darker, which is a very pleasing effect. The focus throughout is very good, with all the edges of the glass clear.

Overall:

I think you did a very good job with this vase. I'm struggling to figure out why you placed as you did, but I think it was just a plain lack of "oomph" in the shot. Its very nicely done, and technically good, but the subject just lacked that little something that grabs the attention of the voter. But I have to say, you've done well with this, and keep up the good work! :)

I like how the colors in your photo create contrasts to each other.

if you were a museum photographer, for instance, this would be very useful. Nicely done light, and I like the added texture of the backdrop. Tasteful, simple and useful.

You have done a great job of retaining the wonderful shades of color on this old piece of glass. A longer exposure might have brought out more of the detail and white balance adjustment would enhance the colors even more. 7

Put shoulders and a face up there, and it's my Great Grandmother in her most colourful dress!

Beautiful lighting here. This shot could have easily been ruined if the lighting hadn't been just right. Good use of the plain background, it really makes the vase stand out... A beautiful subject that was done justice in this beautiful picture. Nice job!

Nice work. Focus is great. It might be more effective if the vase weren't sandwiched between shadows.

too dark

Great lighting - I'd love to know the approach you took. I'm guessing a light behind the background was the main source with some fill from above.

I like the lighting, but might have used a backdrop with less texture, or a darker colour. it kind of washes out the vase IMO. otherwise very nice.

Some shots make it near impossible to be critical :-). If I strained, I\'d say, it\'s a lil too \'civilized\' for my wild nature. Altogether, a successful, pleasing result.

a light through the glass reflecting on the background might be nice.

very pretty vase, Teh lighting seems a bit dim to me, though that might have been the effect you were going for. The backdrop is fitting for this shot, it flows well. Good shot.
