Challenge: At the Zoo (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Location: Santa Barbara Zoo
Date: Jul 16, 2005
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/1250
Date Uploaded: Jul 16, 2005

This shot was taken at the Santa Barbara Zoo. This giraffe is well known to locals and always gets a lot of comments. The zoo has a sign posted at the exhibit that reads:

You may have noticed that one of the giraffes at the Zoo has a crooked neck. This giraffe was born at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in July 1986. She arrived at the Santa Barbara Zoo in good health in July 1987. As she matured, her neck developed a small kink, which has increased gradually over the last ten years. This particular giraffe has reproduced at the Zoo and has not shown any signs of pain. We suspect that this kink has formed from an unstable joint in her neck. The unstable joint is most likely due to a benign bony growth near the joint surface. As this mass grows, it will slowly displace the two bones, producing the angle. She functions normally and continually monitored for any signs of pain or changes in her general health.

Santa Barbra Zoo - I've seen this guy. Weird that he isn't dead.

An unusual capture. I hope the poor animal is ok. The background is a bit distracting. Face is a bit over exposed and I wish it were crispe. Nice comp though...

OH MY! What's up with that? That's just painful to look at, I hope it's OK. That 'kink' in the neck cooperates nicely with the composition of your photo, or vice-versa. Nice dof too. But man, OUCH! Good catch.

Oh my gawd. That absolutely hurts just to look at this image. I would have liked a different crop on this image.

OHH!!! Poor fellow!

Ow, what is going on with him/her? That looks painful.

Nice capture. Focus seems a bit soft and lighting a tad harsh. BOL

Too much pixelation in the backgroung. Were you forced to crop it too much? It really hurts your photo. The back (?) of the other giraffe is also distracting.

Since I am lacking in technical skills, I cannot give helpful comments. I am strictly a photo buff who is trying to improve, but as to telling you what is wrong or right, I am in no position to say. I am simply voting based on whether I like the picture or not. Sorry, maybe someday I will be able to give helpful advice

OUCH! Poor thing. This is a compositionally interesting shot, but IMHO it could use a little more color and a little less light (kinda washed out).

ouch
