This is Hooker Falls, located in the Dupont State Forest, just outside of Brevard, NC. It is a great place to horseback ride, mountain bike (what I was doing this day!), or just hike.

I deserve a 10 on this picture, maybe not for quality, but if you could have seen the single track I encountered while here, you would give me a 10. If you didn't, PM and apologize! :-) (Just kidding)

I was disappointed with my focus on this, but I really don't want to pack a tripod in, and my precarious lurch just above the water's edge would have prevented it anyway.

Greetings from the critique club!

Hi there Karmat! Time to repay you for all your critiques! hehe...

Let me start with this. It certainly fits the challenge nicely. I cannot fault it for that at all.
After reading your notes on the subject, I understand a bit more. FOr a hand held shot, this is great! It would have been 100% better if you had your tripod with you. That's just the focus though, and well, I know about focus problems. they can be a real pain in the butt.

The composition: I like the idea of the flower sitting in front of the waterfalls.. what I don't like is the fact that the one flower is cut off on the side. I know that's nitpicky, but I'd have liked to see more.
I like the choice of border, I think it works very well. I don't think you can really go wrong with black and white. I think if you had just the falls in this picture, you would have had an even better score! Not that you need a better score, lol, 6.1 is so decent, I'd give my left foot for it :D
Take care karmat, great photo, great score!

An interesting example of how the "subject" needn't be in focus to be effective!

i think I would have liked to see the water fall more in focus. maybe more DOF or throw the foreground elements out of focus to get the water? Just a couple of ideas!

Lovely composition. Good choice to have us peeking over the flowers to see the waterfall! I like the waterfall out of focus, however the flowers seem slightly out of focus, too. Still nice light and great work.

Excellent shot. I love the shallow DOF and the focus on the flower.

Very postcardy, and technically speaking a beautiful shot. The only thing that kept it at 9 and not 10 for me was a lack of a certain spung, that magic 'Wow!' spark. But I have to save 10s for *something*, right? :-> Nice focus on the flower in the foreground. It wouldn't be quite as good if the water were in perfect focus too.

Looks like a real postcard to me! I love the colors in this, and I think the black border really adds.

Not sure about the DOF putting the actual waterfall so out of focus when you've given it that title. Also wonder if you couldn't have reduced the exposure a little - the flowers are OK but perhaps a stop or two less wouldn't hurt, but there's too much light on the waterfall. Nicely composed.

Very pretty picture. I'd like to see the waterfall sharp as well as the flower (I think).

Waterfall should have been the focus then.

Love the flowers in foreground and the soft focus on the waterfall. Beautifully done. Wish I'd thought of it.

Really nice, but I wish the "Land of 1000 Waterfalls" postcard would be focussed on the waterfall itself.

You do live in the right place don't you! We have no waterfalls anywhere near here. Your choice of scene for your postcard is excellent, no doubt about that. It is the kind of image I would see on postcards. The only problem with this is that you have blurred out the waterfall, which is your main subject according to the title. A very small aperture would have taken care of that.

The falls should be the focus. Overall nice

Love the depth of field you chose, neat foreground and tastefull font and border.

Nicely represented. The flowers in perfect focus partially framing the falls.

Beautiful picture. Looks great! This would make a very good post card, fits the challenge wonderfully. The focus on teh flowers seems a little too soft, but other than that it's superb.
