Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Family (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro
Location: Madison, WI, dining room
Date: Jul 8, 2005
Aperture: f 13.4
ISO: 200
Shutter: .4 seconds
Galleries: Emotive, Still Life
Date Uploaded: Jul 9, 2005

Raw conversion, adjustment of saturation and slight white balance tweak. Photoshop adjustments, curves and levels, lots of spot editing to clean up background and blemishes on the masks. Final boost to saturation and USM.

Does it convey the idea of family? Well, not really, and I'm sure I'm going to get hammered for it, but dammit, I like the image alot!

Bright colors in sharp focus usually do well ... for a relatively oblique (for DPC) approach to the challenge topic I think you finished respectably, although I thought it was worth a higher score myself.

Amazed this didn't finish higher. Still, I hope you're happy with the shot - it's great!

Although a very creative photo of a family could have been made with these masks, this image doesn't appear to demonstrate any attempt to relate them to the challenge topic.

Nice colorful shot with the masks, I remember when I'm in Italy seeing these, especially in Venice.

Of all the pictures so far that don't have people in them I like this one the best. It looks like a group of sisters.

Interesting take on the challenge. While the subject is interesting I feel the harsh light detracts from the overall presentation. Use of black backdrop excellent. POV, DOF good. Good luck in the challenge!

This is just too overly staged for my taste. Yes it's a group and a family of masks, but just not my cup of tea. I won't fault you for a crisp clear photo, just lacks the oomph that I think this challenge can bring. Hope this is helpful.

I like it sharp, clear, good color. Most will say it doesn't meet the challenge. 9

Nice photo - well composed, goof focus and control of lighting to minimize reflection - BUT - where does family fit in?

WOW! Magnificent colors and DOF. It may sound weird, but the fact that the farthest mask (blue & gold) isn't as far behind the previous one as the others are. To me it is the least sharp and/or interesting (also the only one without a blue highlight surrounding the top of the head), and it seems to call attention to itself with its positioning. Yes, this is REALLY nitpicking (probably because I can find very little else wrong with the shot. Great job! 9 Bumping to 10.

Lovely capture of these masks..... but doesn't say "family" to me.

nice colors and contrast - but I do not feel "family" when I look at it.

Very nice picture. I like how the colors stand out against the black background.
