The "canal du Midi" in southern France links the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. Hundreds of water locks, a couple tunnels and water bridges where built several centuries ago to allow boats to cross this hilly region. Barges where then tracted by horses or mules. Vacationers on rental boats are the main users now.

I appreciate the architecture even more with the background notes...it sure wouldn't last long out here in earthquake country however. I like the aged look you've given it; everything else too!
I agree having a large boat on the river below with one above would be even a little better -- I would probably title it something about "Freeway Interchange c. 1500" (or whenever)...

*Critique Club*

FIRST IMPRESSION: Beautiful composition and a great subject.

CHALLENGE: Meets the challenge.

COMPOSITION: The composition of this shot is excellent. I can't suggest anything to improve it.

TECHNICAL: Esposure is perfect for this shot. The long depth of field adds a lot to it. Your apparent patience in waiting for just the right moment to take this shot paid off well.

CONCLUSION: Your photographs are consistently outstanding, and this one is no exception. It is a privilege to be assigned one of your photographs to critique.

Thanks for sharing and good luck in future challenges!

What a leisurely way to travel! What a great shot showing this unique, delightful mode of transportation. (NEXT year I'm hoping to visit the canal du midi like this!)

Fantastic architecture... as well as capturing the transportation aspect of the challenge. --10

If you could get a boat coming through the river below, now that would certainly set this picture apart. Nice work all the same. I would prefer the colour version, but that is personal taste.

oh the gunk at the bottom of the bridge column must have been so frustrating for you! I really like this location, I know you probably made sure there was some sort of "vehicle" in the picture to make it very clear that this was an appropriate submission for the transportation challenge, but when you get the chance (if you do) take a picture of this without anything going across. Its beautiful, and I love the colouring you've done, your perspective and the detail you have captured.

The perspective is great, and the tone compliments the slow-paced transportation nicely. The only real negative thing is the driftwood, trash or whatever it is beside the pillar in the lower left - it's a little distracting. A higher crop would have eliminated that, but would also take away from the great perspective depth of the bridge. Sometimes you just have to work with what you got. Wonderful image either way!

That is really interesting. Don't see that everyday, unless, of course you live there.

The arches add so much to this picture! Really, a nice touch. I think making it a black and white also adds a lot to this one. Nice picture.

maybe if you had left out the people from this shot, it would look better in your sephia setting? and the junks at the foot of the construction?
