Someone had these two California natives (at least the Poppies are!) growing in their front yard just a couple of blocks from my house. It was pretty windy and overcast which hurt the sharpness a little.

Thanks everyone for your comments. The border is legal if ill-advised, as borders are basically anything-goes except for adding text/art.

For those who like the photo but not the border, here's a link to the same shot with a plain border, as well as two versions of an alternate shot.

Greetings fromt the Critique Club
Hi Paul! (*waves to Isaac*)

Composition
Oohh! All this beautiful color, nothing at ALL in the center of the photo. I'm one of those who'd not like to see you center one single flower - that's boring. But in this case, as Karen said below, it's a big...nothing!

Color
I love the orange and green contrast. I wish we could see more detail in the flowers - maybe a closer view on this beautiful coloring.

Focus
As you say in your comments, it was windy - that leads to two things - accept it and sharpen the pic or come back later. Without doing either, you know what the problem is, so I'll move on.

Lighting
This was an overcast day? The flowers in the left middle look super bright - almost overexposed. If you shot near dusk or dawn, perhaps you'd get better natural light.

Subject matter
An appropriate selection - I would have changed the composition, but that's just my idea of what it should look like.

Overall
I didn't think this kind of border was legal - as did many others. I think it hurt this shot overall anyways. A good shot - keep playing with it.

Good luck!

I don't like the border on this pic. It takes away from the picture itself. Maybe because its soft? I would have preferred to see a solid black border. The photo is great, just the framing is wrong.

That orange is amazing! I especially like the combination with the green background, it works well here. The deep DOF is also good. What I don't particularly find to enhancing for this image is the border.

the color here is nice, but the framing seems to create an odd flow in this image... - setzler

the composition of the orange flowers arranged like leading lines brings my eye to .. the grassy center of the photograph. makes me wonder where to land my eye. great colors, focus, etc.. but that big empty space in the center bothers me.

Very pretty shot. However, this is one case where I feel the frame distracts from the picture instead of adds to it.

I feel like the dark border is too thick and the flowers are too close to the edge of the frame. My eye is drawn to the dark spot in the middle.

Didn't know we could use fadded borders. The "empty" space in the middle of the shot isn't very good. You should have zoomed in on just a few of them maybe.

Engaging and unique composition. I\\\'m not sure this type of border is allowed. I don\'t think it helps the image much as it calls much attn. to itself. Good luck!
