hey mav. i think there's a way to convey the mood you were going for more emphatically. in this case it didnt really convey, but maybe seemed more like an error? also your shot looks really "jpeggy". i'm wondering if that's because of your post processing or because you're shooting it at a high compression setting?

I voted this fairly low (4 is low for me!). I have my monitor set to a gamma of 2. This makes photos like yours appear very grey and washed out. It's supposed to be the ideal gamma setting for graphics work, so perhaps a little more contrast would have been a good idea.

Oh well, I managed to get my flora shot onto the Olympus c-720 page :P. Don't expect it to stay there for long though.

Thanks all - nobody really "got" the mood I guess. I had a more contrasty version, but it just blew out the highlights in a few of the petals. I wanted this effect - the dark stem becoming lighter and lighter as it went toward the end of the petals. *shrug* Next time!

Interesting! The composition is good although I would have cropped off a little more on the left hand side, it appears a little unbalanced to me.

The composition and lighting are great! I love the light fading to the right. Super choice for the challenge! Your framing and angle of the flower is breathetaking. A solid 9 from me!!! Great job!

It's pretty. I don't think this was a very good subject for black and white, very low contrasts (except for the background). The detail of the petals seems less than pronounced (esp. for a macro). The stamen/pestal are very hard to see. Overall, seems to dark (setting a mood perhaps?) Comment removed, my bad. 7 Rob the Swash

Beautiful composition but this is showing up dark on my screen.

Graet work with the macro. I would to see this photo in color too. Although the b & w kind of gives it a totally different feel, and emotion.

Although looking at this tends to make my nose itch since I'm allergic to lillies, this is a very nice photo. It is nicely framed. I like how it comes out of the corner and "explodes" into the picture. I like the black & white. It is also nicely focused and shows great detail. It's just a little too dark for my liking. The lighting on the flower is perfect...I think it's just the contrast that needs to be adjusted just slightly to make it more appealing to me.

i love the moodiness of this and the detail is great. the crop is nice, too. a little more contrast would make this photo outstanding!

Nice title, very creative. You caught the texture well of this flower, the tone is very dark and it gives me a little bit of an eerie feeling.

The composition here is really nice... I like the perspective you chose... the tonal range and contrast is rather flat overall... the 'white' is non existant... i would play with the levels on this one some and see if you can bring the contrast up :) - setzler

the trumpet does seem to call out of the darkness - but ot would be more effective if you ramped up the contrast - whiter whites, and blacker blacks. The shiny/ sticky texture of the pistle is also in contrast to the rest of the flower - calling an insect - if that is the "calling" and not the whole flower as a trumpet you should crop in closer to it and make it contrast more.

Nice B&W, but lacks sparkle.
