I have a slight photographic obsession with this place - the light through this archway, which makes the scene efffectively lit with a giant soft-box at each end, is very special. The curves and lines of the pillars and vaulting, and the motionlessness of the guard make them all seem to be from tthe same material.
It's quite a wait to get, as a shot: all those tourists taking photographs :-) Suprisingly, it was only later, when taking a photograph of a building, that I was accosted as a potential terrorist by our lovely police. This guy, of course, is a real soldier - not, as I think many suspect, some kind of state-sponsored actor: if you want to learn about patience, you should go and watch these boys put up with the tourists' attentions.
Much work to bring out textures and light and shade in the vaulting, and to calm down the brightness of the ground without losing the reflections of light from there. |

| This is a beautifully cpatured image, the tonalities are to die for. I wish it were not cropped so tight to the main pillar on the bottom, and I wish the arch were completed at the top. There's also a very off sense that this is laning over tot he right. I say "odd" because checking with an alignment aid shows that most of the verticals are indeed vertical. Oddly enough, the one in the BG next to the guard is not... Whatever... Nice shot! |

I wonder if it's a certain software that does it or it's down to personal preference, but I have come across a few images like this recently on DPC. Something about it that looks to me like there's a clear layer of paint over it hiding some fine details otherwise present in the image. I can never be cerain, but there's definitely something odd about it - some sort of filter at an earlier stage perhaps. Or maybe I am just not familiar with something ..
And yeah - I like the shot :) |

| wow. i almost submitted a photo that looked just like this but the guard in mine wasn't wearing as cool an outfit. Great work. One of the best in the challenge. |
