Challenge: Apple (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Location: Reykjavik, Iceland

Aperture: 5.6

Used a 550ex and a 420ex from the left side to light this, direct flash and no bounce as I needed every bit of strength from them as I could get.

My friend Hjalti (not a DPCer) has recently bought this HUGE aquarium that holds about 800 litres of water and currently it was empty so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to try one of these splash shots I have seen so many of here on dpc and other places. This is my first time doing anything similiar as this and it was a lot of fun, I am definately going to do this again sometime.

Used selective colour to specifically darken the green backround, shadow/highlights to bring out a little more detail in the apple and curves to increase the contrast and cropped a bit out of the photo (took it wide intentionally to be able to crop later).

The title is meant as a tribute to Terje´s great image The Splash of a Kiwi wich is one of my favorite shots on this site.

Wow, I've never seen this one before... Don't tell Terje, but I like this better than the kiwi!! The complimentary colors are gorgeous and the clarity is perfection!!! Adding to my faves. :)

Já það væri kúl að lýsa svona mynd að neðan, snúa henni á hvolf þannig að þetta líti út eins og ís-skúlptúr með epli á toppnum.
Snilldar mynd hjá þér - gullfalleg!

Hmmm that's what I thought. I didn't say this is a bad shot, on the contrary I clearly stated that it's very well done shot. A majority of you misunderstood me. What I actually said is that digital Photography makes it way easier to achieve certain images. It's a good weapon for heavy/difficult conditions. I can't say, that in an environment where you can shoot hundred of photographs at an incredible rate, such images stun. If I assess a digital picture I simply raise the expectations. I turn my eyes towards other aspects, that are still of great value, like creativity and "out of the box thinking". I search virtues that make a picture unique in a "unique" way :) This picture doesn't show this. Take for example the 3rd and the 4th place. These images are very creative and well done. Water splashes are common not to say oridinary. Best example ... look how many water splashes are there in this challenge.

Many people here get upset because one man dared to say that this shot is not creative and that he doesn't like the fact that it's a blue ribbon. Take it cool :)

Hi Iarus. Loved your response to the person who did not like water shots. You are a gracious person and obviously self-confident and easy-going. Good for you. Your photograph was wonderful and deserved to win the ribbon. I congratulate you. As a "one shot wonder" - at least so far - I hope you will win many more ribbons. I won one on the second challenge I entered and haven't won one since. ;-) Ah well. But we all keep doing this because we love it and it is fun. And the challenge helps focus our photography on new unexplored topics and to stretch our boundaries. To me that is what you did when you tried the splash shot. And it worked very well. The clear focus and bright colors worked perfectly. Keep up the good work. Regards, Ann

Many concepts go into a winning photo. What does it for me is the contrast of colors. I love the greenish hue of the water against the apple. Congrats!

I don´t really see where you get this idea, as I clearly stated in the photographers comments I say "This is my first time doing anything similiar as this and it was a lot of fun, I am definately going to do this again sometime."

It's not a symbol of an 'ideal or the best' image to me.

Well fair enough, that is your opinion but you can never please everybody and while I appreciate your opinion on this, I respectfully disagree. I don´t think there has ever been a ribbon winner here at DPC that doesn´t get a lot of 4 and less in grades so there you go. I must admit though that several times I have given ribbon winnners "low" scores so all I can say is that fortunately different people have different tastes and it all pretty much evens out in the end.

Hehe, don´t worry, none taken, I value people that say their opinions, no matter how much I disagree.

To everybody, thanx for the comments, favorites and of course the votes, I appreciate it. Now for the hard part, to get another ribbon to prove I am not a "one hit wonder" :o). Cheers from Iceland, Larus.

A very nice image ... if you're not "washed" by the ever growing water shot invasion. I see from, what you wrote, that you do many water shot's and that you are particulary interested in this theme. That's ok with me but personally I rate creative shots, that surprise me, as the best. If I saw this image 2 years ago I would be amazed but now it's just another very beautifull well technically done water splash image. Can't say I am not surprised it won but neither can I say that I am glad. Congratulations for this nicely done image anyway.

Don't get me wrong, but I am infuriated, that people spray objects with water drops or use some water techniques, since it's seems to me so cheap.Well we know that there are loads of water shot's in here so I say we should try to do something invoative. It's not a symbol of an 'ideal or the best' image to me.

It doesn't have virtues that I seek in a winner shot. A good technical look is far too little to me, especially in digital photography! If you had done it on a film than it would be a different story :) Digital photography seems to give tools available to a wider range of people, making certain photography themes way easier to achieve - I am not saying it's bad but as a result my "bar" - expectations are way higher.

Well I can't say I'm an adulator. I speak my mind and if I have offended you, then I am sorry, that wasn't my intention.

Propably lots of spelling mistakes - sorry for that.

This challenge brought out the usual reviews by the "splash" photographers, to whom water is manna. But this perspective is unique among them today. It is quite fortunate you got one shot with approximately half the apple clearly visible and half covered in those great bubbles. One of my top 10 votes.

Seems to be a lot of splashing fruit lately, since the article in Popular Photo a couple of months ago. This one is one of the best I've seen. I love the colors, and sharpness of the image. I also like that it is taken from below the surface of the water, looking up, rather than at surface level. Very nice image that should do well. <8>
