Kanesh hires out his pony for short sunset rides along the Galle Face Green's seaside promenade in Colombo. Each ride costs around 100 rupees, and at the end of a good day, his take home (after paying for the daily licence to operate, feed for the pony, etc) is about US$7. That amount, he said, is just enough to keep his family of five fed and clothed, but it's a day-to-day process. Small emergencies, like a fever for his four-year-old boy or his eight-year-old son tearing his school uniform, could turn catastrophic. Kanesh dreams of one day being able to move up the ladder, and perhaps drive a three-wheeled tuk-tuk, which could double his daily income.

Shot in color with canon 20d, 24-70 lens, exposure compensation -2 steps at f/2.8. Processed through curves, desaturation, selective color adjustment, contrast adjustments, selective dodge and burn, bordered, resized and saved for web. Probably should have been shot with narrower aperture to get more dof, and prevent the banding in the sky upon post-process.

There is perhaps a tad to much darkness but it is a great silhouette with strong human elements. I like it a lot.

Like the composition, but there is way too much detail lost from what I am assuming is a big level adjustment. I think colour would have been a nice version with the setting sun and the resulting effect in the sky. A little more detail and this would have done really well IMO. Good Luck.

Great shot. Wish the horses head was visible.Monochrome really works well with this.

Top photograph - this I really like. It has closeness, rather than the detachment of so many of these silhouettes - a sense of involvement, of presence. The processing/tonality harks back to an older approach, like some of the eastern european masters of the thirties. Beautifully done.

Nice shot, but I think there needs to be more contrast between the silhouette and the background.

I'm not fond of the white border for this grey-toned image. It detracts from the point somewhat. Also, the feet area blends too much with the sand. Otherwise, a nice set up. 5

Excellent..I love the darkness in this shot, esp. the clouds to the left, and the slight amount of light hitting the waves..creates a really nice feel.

very pretty image - though very dark (even for silhouette). Area under donkey neck looks odd - maybe missed this area when PS-ing the image.
