... and their only punishment is that they see the dawn before the rest of the world. Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900)
When I read about the competition I thought this is somehthing for urban photographers. Nature and landscape Photographer have no lights in the late night hours and startrails are hard to take for digital photographers cause of the noise. So I throw it away to be part of my first open challange on dpchallenge. On That day I decided to make a photobiwak at the beach to take some pictures of the morning sun. When I reached the beach I was blinded by the moonlight and suddenly become very nervous. As a landscape photographer I had not only to fokus on startrails in late night hour. There ist also the moon.
The sea was very heavy this day, wind are hard. I Build up my camera put on a ng grad with 2 stops and cought the movement of the wave. It was hard to get a clear shot not only focussing was hard because of the waves also the foam sprankled my filter.
For the challange I decided not to make a typical forgroundstone/background sky photo. This should be something special. The wave fog should be in full size so I put the stones a little bit in the background to show the full wavefog. I was also stimulated about the reflexions of the little stones in the foreground they were so sweet an seemed to be untouched by the bad threatening sea.

So hope you like my art. I so, feel free in visiting my on my website and write something in my guestbook, english is welcome...

Amazing shot. Thanks for telling us about how you did this as well. What lens and focal length did you use for this?
05/12/2005 10:22:14 PM
Wow, first shot entered and you took 2nd. Way to go! Don't take all the ribbons. hehehe ;-) Congrats!

Stunning work - an inspired interpretation of the challenge and something I've not seen here before. Well done.

Congratulations on your Ribbon, sure there will be more to come. A beautiful entry that captures the essence of nature late in the night.

Congratulations on the red. Once more a simple, uncluttered image wins an award. Most has already been said but it is well deserved.

Apart from the image, your description in English was almost as enchanting as the picture. My favourite part "the foam sprankled my filter" WONDERFUL. In future, when the rain or the sea interrupts my photography I will remember being "sprankled" and won't feel so annoyed.

Thus far the only photo in this challenge that has taken my breath away. Wonderfully ethereal shot.
05/09/2005 05:24:53 PM
Very nice, the rocks are a nice touch to this beautiful seascape.
05/09/2005 08:07:14 AM
I love the way the slow exposure turns the sea to smoke. This is very beautiful.
05/09/2005 02:58:22 AM
Oh ! That's really fastastic! I *LOVE* the composition! really the number one at the moment!
05/08/2005 12:00:49 AM
I've used that same quotation, but for a very different photo : )

Very nice near-alien landscape.
05/07/2005 10:36:31 PM
Excellent exposure. I particularly admire the faint stars in the sky. B&W treatment also works well here.
05/07/2005 12:32:25 PM
lovely very atmospheric 9
05/07/2005 08:18:42 AM
Love the dreamy feel and the sharpness of he rocks.
05/06/2005 10:43:37 PM
This has a really divine "otherworldly" feel to it...so remote, so quiet...I love it.
05/06/2005 09:45:57 PM
you certainly maximixed positive effect of long exposure as well as monochromatic lighting .. excellent!
05/06/2005 12:51:01 PM
great composition, love the foggy water look and stars too. top shot
05/06/2005 12:17:05 PM
This is beautiful! I love the choice to go with black & white.
05/06/2005 10:20:43 AM
stunning, like a dream land
05/05/2005 10:17:55 PM
This is really beautiful!! You must hav had a good amount of moonlight. You got a nice fog effect from the moving water, but not too long of an exposure to keep the stars at a nice pinpoint. I like! 10
05/05/2005 09:32:58 PM
Gorgeous! Dreamy, artistic, simple. It feels like something from a midnight dream.
05/05/2005 05:34:38 PM
I really like this image. My favorate of the contest. Is this actually moonlight on the rocks?
05/05/2005 04:52:49 PM
good atmosphere, and lighting,
05/05/2005 01:54:32 PM
Dreamers can find their way by moonlight, voters can find their way by moving the mouse to the right, until they see 10, and click. Seriously, my favorite in the challenge. Absolutely beautiful photo! As a print, I'd like it better if the stars were cloned out, but I understand that they had to be left in for the challenge. Thats just my opinion anyway, I'm sure many people liked the stars.
05/05/2005 12:36:45 PM
You have good detail. Was this last remaining light from sunset or darkness?
05/05/2005 03:51:05 AM
Breathtaking...I love the choice of B/W!
05/04/2005 08:21:18 PM
I like the slightly misty look of the water.
05/04/2005 03:04:36 PM
Beautiful mood to this photo. I'd have liked the sky a little darker though. Love the stars. Shutter speed has worked well here.
05/04/2005 03:02:03 PM
This is so pretty. I love how you can see the stars twinkling in the sky.
05/04/2005 12:44:00 PM
Will probably medal. In a poor pool of shots, this is a standout.
05/04/2005 12:23:21 PM
serene, mystical... personally would have liked the horizon to be higher, revealing more texture in the foreground
05/04/2005 11:46:43 AM
Great shot. I can't hepl wondering how this would look like in colors, but the b&w works very well and makes the image stand out amongst so many good ones. You've managed to create a dreamy feel and I beleive that's why I like this one so much. Good job.
05/04/2005 10:10:31 AM
very nice. now this is a great use of extremely low light. the water looks almost like fog. 10
05/04/2005 09:51:21 AM

05/04/2005 09:36:43 AM

This photo says so much, with so little - great shot.
05/04/2005 09:22:33 AM

05/04/2005 07:31:43 AM
Talking about minimalism.....I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. Great image...10
05/04/2005 07:20:37 AM
This image really gives a feeling of being on an Alien Landscape. fantastic.....9.....
05/04/2005 06:49:18 AM
very nice - different take on the misty water effect
05/04/2005 06:35:37 AM
Very Nice image. I'm so happy that you did not include the moon in this shot. Great lighting. Great exposure. Lovely textures. Outstanding image! Possibly a blue ribbon winner. (10)
