OK, so kid pictures usually don't do that well in challenges, and everybody is going to mention the bright sun spot on the left side of his cheek. That's OK, this isn't a studio shot, and I like it. I hope some of you do as well.
JD

Major editing steps include:
Crop, convert to BW using Calculations in Photoshop, Gray/Blue/Screen/55%

I then adjusted levels, then used shadow/highlight recovery, which really brought out the detail in the eyes, making them the real focal point of this shot. I then did some minor levels again, and some contrast adjustment.
I then hit Cntrl-Alt-Shift-Tilde to select the light areas, inverted the selection, and then filled a new adjustment layer with a warm tone. I changed the blend mode to overlay and reduced the opacity. I thought about cloning out the dirt on Josh's face, but decided to keep it, as it helps to define his character in this shot.
I then ran it through Fred Miranda's Intellisharpen utility, followed by USM at 160/0.15.

the eyes look very unnatural (too bright or too much contrast), and the lighting on the left side of the face is a bit distracting as well..

This is excellent work. The eyes in this portrait are mesmerizing, and your choice of toning is strong also.

This is going to sound silly, but the first thing I notice about this shot is the eyes...which is great. But then it seems the thing that grabs my attention most are the nostrils! The just seem so dark compared to the rest of the face, I guess. In any case, I find that to be very distracting.

I like the freckle, not so much the dirt. Good strong composition none-the-less. Are the eyes that bright naturally or did you dodge them that bright?

Good portrait and excellent focus on the eyes. The border may be a bit overdone for my taste

This photo is absolutely brilliant. The right cheek is a little hot, but it doesn't bleed into the background so it still helps define the curves of the subject's face. Very nicely done.
