Camera on tripod.
Shot taken of laptop with screen shut and screen open.

In photoshop, the section of the "screen closed" picture which overlaps the screen area of the "open" shot.

This section was then "skewed" to make it into a rectangle. This jpg was then set as the desktop on the laptop.

The final picture was then taken with the laptop and tripod in exactly the same place so the screen's image makes the laptop appear transparent

nice work, highly inspired ;-) i guess you're practicing for the 'see-through' challenge that someone proposed...

nice work. i'm going to have to try this. hope this does well for you. good luck!

I was wondering if anyone was going to do this (I posted the message about the technique in the forum). Pretty good job here - maybe a bit more work matching the colors would have helped. But the matching up of the background lines is excellent!

Very creative and well executed.

Clever idea, nice work with the alignment.

Well now that is extremely clever. Not a photo I'd hang on my wall but one that I'd study to guess how you did it and to marvel at how well you matched the image on the screen to the background. I give it a 7 for cleverness and imagination.

Just great! 8

Very clever concept

Very Nice. Would be a 10 if the monitor managed to match the surrounding colours.

OMG, how much effort did this take you?! Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of the lighting and white balance. Composition seems like an afterthought. Well done for effort though!

Good idea! Well Done!

Here's one DPC voter who hopes you use some other machine to view DPC challenges and to vote: the color balance is not within a country mile of being the same as that of the camera.

I'm not finding the composition to be very inspiring. The print is busy. And the space depicted is cramped. The computer is not an unusually photogenic one, nor does it have any obvious visual or functional connection with lamp, print, or table. My opinion, for what it's worth.

It's a good technique to have mastered.

Great job!

Cute. i would have bumped the score up a bit had it been an Apple;-)

Extra ordinary monitor I must say but perhaps you should have taken that picture outside or with more interesting things to see through the monitor
04/21/2005 03:26:23 AM
Clever! 9 for effort.

This is a neat idea, though I would have used a slightly different background, the wall and the cut off lamp take away from the image in my opinion.
04/20/2005 02:29:37 PM
would have been much more convincing if you'd have taken more time to get the color-balance a little closer between the shot on the monitor and the surrounding area.
I wanted to do something like this for a challenge myself, but just couldn't make it work with a CRT.. so kudos on getting a pretty good illusion going. (except, of course, for the color balance issue)

nice illusion. good photoshop, or there really is a transparent screen.
04/19/2005 09:26:06 PM
Very clever photo! You did a great job putting this together. 8

Creative, and fun technique, but, looking at a computer and computer lamp is not real interesting.
04/19/2005 07:50:18 PM
I want one.
04/19/2005 06:41:27 PM
That took a bit of work...nice
04/19/2005 03:22:10 PM
Cleverness factor outweighs technical photo factor. Very clever though.
04/19/2005 12:43:44 PM
I'm guessing that took a while
04/19/2005 09:35:04 AM
color is off on the monitor picture.....
04/19/2005 02:12:22 AM
This would have scored a little higher to me if the colors in the monitor were adjusted to be a match to the outside world. Even so, very cool image. Thanks for sharing and for the effort in setting up the shot.
