This is really cool.. but I wish there was less border, and more photo.

Fantastic depth, light and technique - this is a truly rich and fulfilling portrait.

I do agree that this doesn't immediately communicate 'Best Friends' but really, who cares? The challenges are there for competition but portfolios are what really count.

My view is that if your challenge entry can't communicate the theme at first glance (without a title) then it won't fair too well with those who vote the theme element highly.

Edit: I do find that border a bit overpowering though

Didn't get to vote on this challenge unfortunately, but I think this one is a beautiful and strong portrait.
He's got to be your best friend or else you wouldn't have put this photo up.
This is the kind of photos that gives me that warm feeling inside.
The man himself is very good looking, but your lighting and crop make his qualities to stand out so much more.

I really don't understand why all this children and animal pictures are higher rated than this here. It's not difficult to make a photo of two cued kids or two ducks and name them "best friends". This here shows the real friendship between two people. Otherwise the photographer wouldn't have had devoted the whole picture to " Jok "
It's a pity that people are not thinking a little bit further and try to see what's behind a picture. Anyway, Sofap for me it's the best picture of the challenge together with "Beautiful Anneu".

All I can say is thank you. I received 38 comments and most said that it did not fit the challenge. This was my first, and I thought we were to be creative. I did get other comments that got the point, very few.

Nice portrait, except for the border. But I don't see how this depicts "best friends", it may be your best friend which is good, but how is the viewer to know that. Looks like a nice portrait of a handsome guy.
03/22/2005 08:14:37 PM
I see only one person here. Who is the implicit friend?
03/22/2005 07:28:52 PM
Nice shot. Good use of shadow , light and the outline adds an interesting touch.
03/22/2005 01:11:42 PM
awesome portrait but doesn't really fit the challenge
03/22/2005 12:57:46 PM
The border really adds impact with this shot... I like it!
03/22/2005 12:17:20 AM
I think the portrait is EXCELLENT, but the frame detracts from the strong image. 7

A beautifully executed photograph - great lighting and composition, captivating look in the model's eyes. I would have given this an 8 if it were more in the theme, but I do not see the "Best Friends" topic coming through here. You may want to submit this in other rounds where it would fit better?
03/21/2005 01:52:42 PM
hmmm, i'm not really feeling that "best friends" vibe here.
03/21/2005 01:34:10 PM
Outstanding lighting. I hope you do well.
03/20/2005 05:18:38 PM
Not quite sure how this represents best friends...
03/20/2005 04:23:09 PM
background is a bit dark for me, but I see what you were trying to do. Best friends? this is your best friend perhaps?
03/20/2005 02:23:36 AM
This is a truly stunning portrait. I love the simplicity of composition, and the invitation of this man to engage me as the viewer, causing me to think "who is this man's best friend, the photographer, or is it me the casual viewer?" One of my favs for this challenge.
03/20/2005 02:08:29 AM
Very nice lighting but where's the other friend?
03/19/2005 09:14:57 PM
Great portrait style, congratulations for the use of lights and tones.
BUT I can't see friendship in it.
03/18/2005 10:36:02 PM
A stunning portrait, perfect in all elements!
If only it somehow fit the Challenge category.
03/18/2005 08:28:39 PM
Nice portrait, just doesn't convey the friendship feeling to a stranger...
03/18/2005 05:05:08 PM
beautiful image. Not sure I like the border but I love the colors otherwise. Not sure what this has to do with friends but I gave you an 8 anyway. Kind of haunting.
03/18/2005 08:41:54 AM
thats really great portraiture and i will add it to my favorites but it doesn´t really fits the challenge i think cause for friends you always needs two or more people
03/18/2005 03:19:06 AM
Wow! what a stunning image I think this is awesome. Not what I expected I was thinking of two people but I guess this is your best friend
The dramatic background and his georgous skin tones make this a wonderful image I hope it does well. I like the border as well I give you my only 10 of the challenge Good Luck
03/17/2005 11:46:19 AM
I'm reading this as one friend, rather than best friends. But I do like the pix's tones and that's why I'm rating this higher than 99 per cent of the people shots that were submitted for this challenge. Bringing down the light level and emphasizing the two eyes might be an interesting exercise, imho.
03/17/2005 08:22:09 AM
nice portrait, don't see where the subject fits in.
03/17/2005 08:10:30 AM
I''m not sure this fits the challenge, but it is an extraordinarily beautiful picture. Very professional looking - so I'm scoring it high in spite of my opinion re. challenge.
03/17/2005 06:58:22 AM
friends?
03/17/2005 06:01:04 AM
Probably the best Photograph I've seen in this challenge so far, unfortunatley, tho I think I have a feel as to what you were getting at with this, it really dosen't represent "Best Friends." 6
03/16/2005 08:38:17 PM
fantastic picture, must have been airbrushed... don't see how it meets the challenge though
03/16/2005 06:01:27 PM
Nice pictures, but what does this have to do with friends? Unless the title reveals something I don't know about....
03/16/2005 05:54:58 PM
I really like this photo.
03/16/2005 02:00:47 PM
I really like that you put your best friend in this shot as an individual instead of shooting it as a couple. I think it's more touching that you have expressed your friendship through this portrait. Really beaituul work. I love the way you framed it and the lighting works really well. Beautiful eyes. 10
03/16/2005 12:19:52 PM
You have a terrific portrait here. However, I dont think it transmits the \"best friend\" relationship. He seems a lonely and sad man.
03/16/2005 11:14:56 AM
Where is the friendship? Otherwise, I think it's a great shot!
03/16/2005 09:21:29 AM
Great textures and lighting. I'd prefer it without the border. Oh, not seeing the friend thing going on.
03/16/2005 03:12:49 AM
Like this shot.
03/16/2005 02:48:23 AM
Great shot! ...but where's his best friend...?
03/16/2005 01:55:25 AM
really really nice shot!! However it does not fit the challenge???
03/16/2005 01:10:20 AM
Wonderful portrait, but how does this show the "special relationship of best friends"?
03/16/2005 01:08:33 AM
I really like this as a portrait (maybe a tad dark on the righthand side) but really can't see how it fits in the challenge.
03/16/2005 12:38:49 AM
I really like this shot. I guess this is a portrait of your best friend? The challenge is really not conveyed here. I love the dramatic light and detail on the skin. The border works, but is a bit over the top.
03/16/2005 12:30:48 AM
awesome
