Wow, a very deep meaning behind it.
Did you set out with that meaning in mind or make the meaning fit the finished product?
Regardless, a great picture.

Thanks for all the votes and constructive candid feedback and of course the ribbon. What a confidence builder. As a new’be I am impressed with the welcome I have received and the camaraderie of this group. When I submitted I was not really sure what to write in the details section but as I look at other ribbon winning photos I see where comments can be helpful.

Photo and the meaning:

The shot was taken mid afternoon on a cloudy day in Chandler Arizona about a mile deep into the desert. My 11yr old daughter was the model wearing one of my wife’s nightgowns. The point of the picture is that children have a gift of not seeing the big picture and the day to day tribulations of life which is seen much clearer as we become adults (crime, poverty, etc.). The empty drawers symbolize minimal possessions, the dying tree represents aging and sitting alone in the middle of the desert represents an emotion of no purpose. But not all is lost as the child has the gift to block out this negativity and conjure a feeling of peace and contentment with taking in the moment and splendor of the beautiful sky. If only everyone in world had this gift, imagine…

How it was done:

Basically I went to a local hardware store and purchased a piece of door trim (about 5 feet long), mounted it to the frame and drove the door trim into the ground with a hammer. I used sticks and other items to prop up the stacked drawers.

Again thanks for all the votes and feedback.

I like those wooden boxes. You did a good job on the frame too. Looks as if it were suspended to the womans's nose. I don't like the centered horizon. The yellow tone is a bit too saturated. How did you keep it out of the sky? 8.

Good interpretation of the theme. I find the branch on the left a little distracting, but a good shot.

If only there was as much sharpness and contrast in the grass as there is in that cloud on the right I would have given it a 9, but there isn't so I gave it an 8. Nice shot.

I love this!
It's beautiful and disturbing at the same time, which is perfect when dealing with surrealism.
I wish there were more color and contrast, but I see how you were trying to go for a dream state.

Excellent. This concept is so good that chopping down that annoying tree might be worth the effort. A slightly tighter crop wouldn't hurt either. Having voted on all of the entries now, I think this is a ribbon contender. Good luck! 10

There are a handful of people who hit the nail on the head with this challenge and this is a perfect example. There are just too many good shots in this challenge to predict the ribbon winner. Good luck, probably don't need it though!!!! 10

In my estimation, the finest of this challenge, which by artistic-cultural understandings presents very few truly surreal photos. Your photo presents us with a way through, outside the box, into the beyond, a lovely dreamscape. Thanks for a great photo. My favorite to win! 10

03/09/2005 10:17:52 PM
My favorite so far. You have the elements of the surreal, and pleasing aesthetics too. 10
  Photographer found comment helpful.
03/09/2005 07:52:08 PM
Though it has surrealistic elements, it seems more "naif" to me. Neverthless, it causes a strong impression on the viewer. 9.

excellent. its too bad the scenery is not too nice (ie that tree on the left) but the colours and idea are really good. 10

03/09/2005 02:16:14 PM
Absolutely in the spirit of this challenge. Sepia tone is nice but I wonder if highly saturated colors might have been more in the style of surrealism? Regardless, the coloring didn't stop me from awarding this a solid 10. It is the best in the competition, in my opinion. Well done.

03/09/2005 01:02:55 PM
I think I might like this more without the tree coming in from the left but I still have this picked as the blue.

Strong, dreamlike imagery, odd relationships defying logic. It's a very static image, but very beautiful and evocative. Very nice job. If this does not get a ribbon, I'll be very disappointed.

Nice appearance of suspended frame. Excellent sky. Who needs to enhance such beautiful clouds. Don't know the meaning of boxes to the left of model, but they do provide balance. The gown is a very nice touch. An 8.

03/09/2005 07:22:56 AM
Great idea and has good composition, crisp and clean image that takes you away but I think a bit of color either grass or sky would have given more impact.
