Challenge: Ansel Adams (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Location: Vasquez Rocks, Agua Dulce CA

Date Uploaded: Mar 6, 2005

This rock has been used in TONS of movies, tv shows and videos, but mostly on the other side of it. I wanted to do a different angle than what everybody else has seen. It's my first time attempting Ansel-style b/w photos. I almost took off work and drove 6 hours up to Yosemite to try to recreate one of Ansel's photos, but my wife talked some sense into me. "How much do you win in this contest again?" So I picked a local landmark.

Let's see if I can remember the steps:
Selected the sky and darkened it a bit (used a polarizer on the lens, but wasn't enough)
Shadows/highlights adjustment
Cloned out two small distracting bright rocks in a shadow.
Brightness/contrast adjustment
Desaturate
Cropped a tiny bit off the left
Added border
Neat Image

Great photo, didn't they shoot a Star Trek episode here? We are headed out there next spring- (cross fingers) to do some shooting. Love the clouds. And remember....Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, creation is the greatest sense of accomplishment. Or something like that, great job in creating a unique image.

Outstanding. The sky has a strange tint to it but it doesn't take away from the overall appeal. - 10

I would have lightened the lighter midtones just a tad more than here, but an excellent example anyway, especially the detail in the deep shadows.

Burn the top corners of the sky into near black and this would be an almost perfect faux AA!

That is good. I seem to expect darker blacks and lighter whites in an ansel adams print...but i like your treatment better anyway. um...so how should I vote?

Nice composition, exposure and translation to B&W. The position of the cloud over the upthrusting of rock is spot-on. Congrats!

Gorgeous subject and excellent processing. The rock itself seems a bit soft, but that's a minor critique of a beautiful photo.
