I keep seeing this image and coming back to it. Your use of dodging and burning to enhance the tones is just thrilling. I love images like this - with harmonies of light and shadow. :) Awesome shot.

The dodging and burning here is so noticeable that the image looks like a cartoon. Show us the original.
03/14/2005 09:04:29 PM
Congratulations on your 4th placing with this beautiful piece of art! Love it!
03/14/2005 07:49:06 PM
I love this photo...
03/14/2005 01:42:04 PM
A very special shot, congrats on your succesful entry.

Thank you for your comments, this has been a fun challenge for me.

This photo is me trying to be Heida. I'm flattered that a couple of you thought it might be her, but if you compare techniques, you'll see how heavy handed mine is, and how amazingly refined she is at this. I appreciate her input (not directly on this photo, but on photos she has in her portfolio) in teaching me more about this amazing technique.

I appreciate the photography purists here on this site. I come from a very different background, one where illusion is king, that of special effects for film and video. I have made a lot of money "fooling" people with photoshop. I love it.

I have very much appreciated the rigid guides that DPC has placed on my photography. It has taught me more about "pure" photography in a couple of months than I ever would have learned on my own in two years.

However, I have learned more about Photoshop in the same time too. Thanks to those who concieved and run this amazing site.

Unfortunately, this photo will be disqualified. I have been asked for validation, I opened the origingal off of my CF card as a drive when I started working on this. I saved the file as a Photoshop file to my main hard drive, and subsequently cleared my CF card. Alas.

Again, thanks for a fun challenge. I didn't cheat, I just can't prove it! :-)

Should have Ribboned IMO. Excellent.
03/14/2005 05:51:51 AM
totally original, well done ! Compostition spot on.
03/14/2005 01:40:44 AM
Underneath this saturation of uber-burning and airbrushed drama, this looks like a fairly decent shot.

Dare you upload the original?
03/14/2005 01:05:14 AM
gorgeous!
03/14/2005 12:40:57 AM
My highest rated image in the challenge! Beautiful shot, I was hoping it would place. Congrats on #4, though!

Ya got yourself the coveted "green" ribbon. Great shot. I like the way you processed it to create a dark and foreboding look.
03/14/2005 12:15:42 AM
Outstanding, very beautiful!
03/14/2005 12:14:02 AM
Congratulations on your 4th placing. An intriguing image.
03/14/2005 12:12:51 AM
IMHO you won this challenge. No question about it. Just look at the number of folks that have selected this image as a favorite... You are clearly the leader!

No disrespect intended to those that placed, but you sir, were robbed. Congrats on a wonderful entry and an excellent finish. Clearly the best in challenge as far as I can see.
03/14/2005 12:12:32 AM
Whoa! So close to a ribbon. This was one of my 10's. Great job!

you've capture the dramatic lighting and sky, well composed, interesting subject... one of my ribbon picks this challenge -- well done!
03/13/2005 08:49:21 AM
I really like your picture. It has almost a dreamy look to it. One of my favorites. Should be a top 5.
03/13/2005 08:17:02 AM
Amazing picture. I'm waiting for the white horse to turn his head. 10. I keep coming back to this photo. I think this is exactly what Adams sought - A "painted" feel so to speak because you know it can't be real. I may have to buy the print.
03/12/2005 11:17:46 PM
This is just fabulous! The depth, tones & composition are just excellent!!
I love it. 10
03/12/2005 09:59:46 PM
This is just to cool! Very neat effect, kind of spooky (eyes of the center horse), excellent composition. Definitely one of my fav's!
03/12/2005 09:08:17 PM
The processing makes this very ethereal. Great dodge and burn work.
03/12/2005 06:58:26 PM
My top pick even though heavily manipulated and bad haloing around the horses ears. I can appreciate that, I had the same problem when I resized and resharpened before saving for web. Gorgeous rendidition - should be in top three.
03/12/2005 05:56:35 PM
That's one big storm brewing in the background. Nice capture.
03/12/2005 08:22:28 AM
I like the idea and think that the composition is great.
03/12/2005 06:43:33 AM
Interesting image, but I find the dodging and burning is much too evident, even for an ANsel Adams-type shot. Just a bit too much fuzziness caused by the aggressive use of dodge and burn. Love the placement of the horses. Awesome crop too.
03/11/2005 06:17:03 PM
i have a guess as to whose this is.

a lot of depth to this - quite nice.

good luck.

I love this picure it has atmosphere and beauty, the only concern I have is that the Three Horses in the next village to me is better known for serving a decent pint of beer

Well Shot

eddited for spelling beer wrong. ..

Some really obvious dodging and burning adds drama to an otherwise undramatic scene. Feels oddly surreal and conflicted as a result. 6
03/11/2005 01:01:12 AM
One of my top picks. Such depth!
03/10/2005 10:45:12 PM
This is just fabulous--10
03/10/2005 11:23:57 AM
Excellent work! Perfect tonal range. 10
03/10/2005 02:54:26 AM
wonderful, nice job
03/09/2005 09:14:33 PM
WOW!!!! I LOVE THIS!!
03/09/2005 06:03:09 PM
This is the best by far, should be ribboned. mmm Heida?
03/09/2005 05:29:07 PM
very well done
03/09/2005 04:58:33 PM
Great picture - superb expression.
03/09/2005 12:12:22 AM
Almost a sureal feel to the lighting here that make it look like a painting. I like the effect. I also like the sense of depth given with the other horse being in the background, and the fence being in the front. This will make a splendid print and should do very well in this challenge.
03/08/2005 10:25:33 PM
What a great shot, I voted this a 10 I think it should place very high.
03/08/2005 09:01:23 PM
an awesome photo....9
03/08/2005 07:52:25 PM
seems a bit over-processed
03/08/2005 07:08:33 PM
I am going to relate what I thought when I first saw your shot
"Oh that is a great shot!!!"... I want to see a ribbon beside this shot ... well done
03/08/2005 05:27:49 PM
A very striking shot. I know that 'a picture is made not taken' but I think the processing is just a little too obvious to feel natural. The horse on the right appears a little left out too on the dodging side. Nevertheless a high scorer.
03/08/2005 04:54:52 PM
Wow, love this photo 10
03/08/2005 02:59:15 PM
good shot, like the sense of movement in it.congrats. 8
03/08/2005 11:17:56 AM
Wow, this is awesome... the sky and angle are stunning. 10.
03/08/2005 08:29:35 AM
it looks like the horizon is lower on the right side...
03/08/2005 04:47:19 AM
beautiful
03/07/2005 10:38:45 PM
Beautiful shot! Love your angle and comp. 10
03/07/2005 08:30:32 PM
nicely done, great DOP and soft mood.
03/07/2005 08:05:20 PM
Beautifull, 10
03/07/2005 07:54:10 PM
to me this looks like its over processed.... I'd love to see your original to compare them... it may be spectacular in color..and ddint translate well to b&w
03/07/2005 05:40:20 PM
If this doesn't win the blue I'll be surprised. It's absolutely perfection 10
03/07/2005 03:19:44 PM
a great shot, framed well. but it looks a little too photoshopped.
03/07/2005 03:19:27 PM
I love this shot! The PP oon the sky is very well done, not obvious and giving a very dramatic effect.10
03/07/2005 01:22:45 PM
The techique you've used makes this very dramatic. Like it a lot.
03/07/2005 12:51:42 PM
I like this! How did you do this?
03/07/2005 11:06:34 AM
10+++ This photo is breathtaking! I love it.
03/07/2005 11:04:30 AM
6 very nice pic although your burning is missing from around part of right horse.
03/07/2005 10:15:02 AM
Gorgeous! love the white horse. 10
03/07/2005 10:08:23 AM
looks very dodged and burned.
Too much in fact.
03/07/2005 10:05:24 AM
Really nice.
03/07/2005 09:18:42 AM
Cool editing though it gives it a litle more modern style than you would expect from a AA image.
03/07/2005 08:07:44 AM
best of the challenge, I love it!
