Challenge: Ansel Adams (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 5400

Date: Mar 4, 2005
Aperture: f/7.9
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/500

Technically, as close as you can get to the zone system in our web-displayed digital world - there are 256 shades of grey in this image: the full tonal range. i had thought about submitting a version which wasn't completely de-saturated - even if you go as far as 95%, you still end up with around 2000 tones available, but unless great care is taken it starts to look like a slightly toned shot, and that's not what the man was about.

Compositionally, this is not very Adams really - more it's my application of his approaches to something I might shoot anyway.

One little nod to the man though - it's very nearly in 5x4 format :-)

Great attention to detail Ed...I really like contrast between the sharp foreground and the softer background.
Well done

Great shot. I actually went here to berling gap and took the same shot but there wasn`t a cloud in the sky. Well done

This is a nice enough shot, but I think that a little extra sharpening would not go amiss.

Nicely done. Your leading lines almost take the place of a subject. I say almost because I keep following the lines into the background to find...

Very nice picture of Seven Sisters. I like the contrasting effect that the white cliff face has with the sky and the top of the cliff. Good activity in the Water......................What is the rock to the right side, did that fall off? Nice --8

The only thing I don't like about this picture is the white border, it kind of distracts instead of helping to enhance the picture ... other than that this is a beautiful image , one of my favorites ....
Good luck!!!

This is a very nice image. A nicely dramatic composition with a good range of tones. I love the way the white cliffs stand out boldly and lead the eye into the image. It gives the image a nice feeling of depth. The image appears to be somewhat over-sharpened though. You might have been better off without the border, and with the image itself a bit larger. I'd love to see a high-res version of this photo. Very nice work!

What a coincidence!!!
I was at the London GTG and we were talking about places to take an AA picture in the South-East. I said that a good place would be on the beach at Birling Gap on the South Coast.

And here it is :)

Good luck

The sea is calm tonight.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.

Yep. You got it! 9
