Challenge: Ansel Adams (Advanced Editing IV)
Collection: Challenges
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 5700
Location: Harwich Port, MA, USA
Date: Mar 2, 2005
Aperture: f:7.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/500
Date Uploaded: Mar 2, 2005

I got damned lucky, been dreary and grey for the entire challenge period and more of same is predicted. Saw a break in the clouds after some more snow, roared down here in 4WD and managed this and a few other shots.

Desaturated by splitting channels.

Cloned out some minor distractions.

Made 2 selection masks: sky and everything-but-sky.

Adjusted curves on image as a whole to correct for underexposure (used to avoid blowing the sky).

Curves and levels on sky and everything-but-sky separately.

Curves and levels on the lower left diagonal.

Minor neat image for noise.

Resized, USM for presentation.

It didn't take you long to climb up in the big leagues! This is very nice, I love the starkness of the b/w and the composition! The wreath is just icing on the cake!

Absolutely gorgeous. The high contrast just makes this jump out. Very nice job.

To me this speaks the most of AA in the top ten. I'm going to need to pick your brain on topics such as landscapes and such... Great image.

Beautiful collection of tones in this. I'm glad the topic came up again, otherwise I might not have seen this. And for the record, my first DC was the Nikon Coolpix 5400, which I really loved.

Bear - having missed this the first time around, I too am delighted to see it now. That wreath on the church alone was a fascinating catch; the technicals make the image outstanding.

One of my favorites of yours Robert. Not sure why I hadn't fav'd it before now.

Great shot, Robert. Hard to make a cemetery shot interesting, I think, but this is super. That Nikon Coolpix 5700 was my first DC...

How'd I miss this?? It is excellent on many levels. The contrast - spot on. The leading line - interesting and perfect to make the eye travel. The symbolism - well that speaks for itself. Great job. I love this very much. Adding to favs right now.

I just love this picture. It feels like another time and place. The lighting is great with the long shadows coming off the tombstones and the storm about to rage from above. One of my favorites.

I don't even remeber voting for this when it was the current challenge, but I looks as though I gave it a ten. I just happened upon it when you left me a comment and I looked up your profile. It is nice to be able to enjoy it all over. Nicely done!

I've obviously been working too much. I haven't seen this shot until just now. This is, sans building, the kind of feel that I was shooting for in my dq'ed cemetary shot. Cold isolation. Forgotten. In a better place? This is an instant favorite!

Terrific shot! I really love this one. A small window of time to get the shot and no footprints in the snow. A bit of luck was on your side but your skill shows through. Congrats!

I've been away Robert, so I'm seeing this challenge for the first time right now. This is great; it does everything you & Ed Clarke suggested in a forum would be required to do well. Full tonal range, with retained detail at every point on that range, etc, etc. Plus it's a damn fine photograph even without its AA tribute qualities. Congratulations on this & on your exceptional contribution to the DPC community.

Great job Robert, good to see your tremendous contribution to this site being rewarded in the score department - just a shame you had to pick such a hotly contested challenge to turn out a 6.7.

Congrats on a top ten finish robert. I liked this composition very much, and would of gave higher than my 7 I gave you if you had bolder light. Your tonal range is great so you almost pulled it off. However, a great finish on an almost perfect photograph.

This is a gorgeous photograph-my favorite of the challenge! The contrasts of b + w and the shades of grey in between are beautiful. The darkness of the clouds, the way the white of the church stands out, the textures of the graves, as well as the walls of the church - these are all things that stand out to me.

03/11/2005 06:16:30 PM
Wow, this is good! The post processing is a little bit visible at the boundary of the barn roof and the sky, which spoils it a bit or me. Still a 9

I really like the composition and the contrast here. If anything, I find the snow in the centre just a touch too bright.

Wow!! drama.....I wonder...could it be possible to create this using a longer exposure?? this way creating more motion in the clouds for more impact??
Anyway I love your image!

This is an outstanding black and white image and the headstones in the foreground give a great sense of depth, just like Ansel used to do. :-) There's a bit of noise in the sky, but that's easy to deal with after the challenge. Very nice job!

Very lovely point of view. Tones are very nicely handled. Sky is a bit grainy, but who cares? 9
