on another note, my main interest is on the mountains. I could see this being far more exciting in a horizontal composition cropped a bit above the mountains.

Underexposed, probably so that you could see the skys. A graduated filter or polarizing filter might have corrected this. Also has a blue cast. Nice atmospheric perspective.
