Hverfell (also known as Hverfjall) is a striking tephra cone located in the M?vatn region of North Iceland. Formed around 2,500 years ago during an explosive volcanic eruption, the crater is about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) across and 140 meters (460 feet) deep. Its almost perfectly circular shape makes it one of the most impressive explosion craters in Iceland.

The volcano consists mainly of loose volcanic ash (tephra) and scoria, giving it a dark, dramatic appearance. Visitors can hike up to the rim along marked trails for a panoramic view over Lake M?vatn, the lava fields of Dimmuborgir, and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Hverfell is part of the Krafla volcanic system, and its formation was likely connected to fissure eruptions in the area. Because of its geological significance and fragile structure, visitors are asked to stay on designated paths to help preserve this natural landmark.
