All I had was a cellphone. The thing had to be in this position or it would move.

I could either choose this DOF (with Portrait mode on the camera) or see all of the background clearly in focus.

So, I went with this.

Great bit of seeing here. He looks alive. With a nice minimal composition like this having it perfectly centered/symmetrical (no tilt) would have helped the impact. Also perhaps either more dof or less dof would have been something to try and see what you liked best.
