My tenth grade English class came up with this idea. They chose the light source (my overhead projector held by one student while the others told him where to aim the light); broke the lightbulb by placing my favorite pink sweatshirt over top of it, and using appropriate force, got this stunning effect (I stepped on the first one and shattered it beyond recognition); helped to determine the angle of the shot; worked as a team; and offered unconditional support of my fledgling photography skills.

I cropped, desaturated, adjusted brightness and contrast, shadow and highlight, hue, and also burned certain areas to dim some distracting blown out whites.

The blue squares in the broken glass are the reflections of the windows in our classroom. The students suggested that the window reflection could symbolize that even though the "thoughts" in this shot are shattered at the moment, all hope is not lost. Because, "Mrs. Olson, you know how you always say that things always get better. That life goes like that, you know, bad times and then good so don't give up."

Do I have the coolest students, or what? :-)

interesting. i feel the gradation to black is a little too sudden for my tastes, but this is a good idea and an interesting twist on this common subject.

Returning for comments:
Nice title. Imagine if there was a figure in the background with a depressed look. Ah, well, that is another image. Nice job here as is. Bumping up.

The lighting seems harsh, but maybe that is the intent. I think I would have tried it in a "light tent" to cut down on the glare.

Nice! Blue, white and black work really well, excellent focus and detail!

Revisiting.

This image has a moody, surreal feel to it with your given choice of lighting/hue adjustment. At first, I quickly skimmed passed this shot as another broken bulb shot. However, I can see the connection between your title and shot (lightbulb = moment of inspiring thought). Well done. This image is beyond reproach from a technical point of view, except for one small area on the screw that appears to have been burned a bit to perhaps reduce a blow out (a bit distracting loss of detail). Does not take away much from the quality of this shot, however. I am raising this one up from 4 -> 7.

One of two lightbulb shots that really moved me in the challenge. There is real emotion and movement here, along with technical excellence. I love the shift from dark to light as you gaze from one side to the other. Terrific composition within the frame. Bold colors. The frame really works for me on this one.

I like this shot. I do on the other hand think the bottom right hand corner is a little bright. I would have used a polarizer to remove that glare too, but that's just me. 5

Lots of lightbulbs this time around... I like what you've done with the lighting, and the composition is nice.
