Maybe not the best picture I took in 2021 but it represented a natural phenomenon that occurred at a time and place which enabled me to experience the once every 17 year event from the beginning of the Brood X invasion until the end over a period of 6 weeks. I had shoulder surgery and was limited to spending my recovery time in the backyard shooting pictures from the time they emerged from the ground until they layed their eggs, died and returned to the soil.

i saw this in voting and thought of you ..
its a brilliant image in every way .. especially those incredible colours .
we get cicadas here in summer .. often heaps .. and sometimes not so many .
but i've never seen one with red eyes ...

a few minutes later . while i googled names of australian cicadas . and in the list there was one with red eyes ..
we have ones we called green grocers .. yellow mondays .. and more i cant remember .. which is why i googled to find out .
here's a link with the ones we have in australia .. cicadas in australia
apparently cicadas have the loudest call of any insect ..
when we have summers when heaps of them have come out of the ground .. and walking past an area when they are all singing can be almost deafening .. :)

Wonderful image, but it feels a bit oversaturated to me.
