was thinking of this for the burst of colour challenge but felt the fly moved too much .. focus stacked.. to be accepted in a standard edit ..

the two photos that went into making this image ..
i was much further away than usual because being in the middle of the day i felt the fly would be spooked if i got any nearer ..

I think you're right about the standard edit versions not being as good. Very cool how you've combined them, though. I've never tried that ... maybe I'll get a chance this summer when all the bugs come out.

flies do that a lot .. I feel its a grooming thing .. they rub their front or back legs together .. :)

edit after googling..
When you see flies sitting on the windowsill rubbing their legs together, they are cleaning themselves. They have to keep these sense organs clean so they can fly with precision to find food and mates and avoid predators

Superb detail throughout! I love the idea of a fly for burst of colour as burst of colour sounds quite joyful and people often think of flies and dirty and grimey so a nice bright and colourful fly photo would be a very welcome addition.

I don't tend to do focus stacking as the software fails to do a good job and my attempts to do it manually are pretty awful so I tend to try for a single exposure - though I have got lucky a few times and managed to combine a few frames in a stack. With the narrow depth of field of macro, I would like to get better at this skill.
