If it's Saturday it must be bonsai day. At some meetings I take a lot of photos, hence a recent challenge entry:

Today I wasn't so lucky as all my time was spent working on my own trees, so there were no photo opportunities.

Back home I just managed a few shots of my neighbour's palm tree before the sun went down. I tried a few shots with different colour filter settings and they made a bit more difference than when I tried yesterday at midday. In the end, however, I preferred the shot with no filter applied, just using my polariser. In all the others the tree was too dark. Now I need to try experimenting with custom white balance.

Update: Now I've seen the photo on the computer, I think it looks horribly flat. I wonder whether I'll be able to work out how to improve on that in camera.

I'd agree with you that the tonal range is fairly flat, although well-exposed for shadow and highlight. Since I'm also working with mininal B&W for this SC, I'm quickly learning that what I see in the viewfinder and/or camera EVF is often not a good representation of what I'll see on the computer.

This is even true for the set-up I'm using which previews the B&W and tonal setting in the EVF. Lot's to learn. Glad I landed on this theme!

I'd have mixed feelings too. I hate the thought that the art that went into creating those bonsai was ruined, but at least they were still alive.

No, I don't know him, but I'll certainly have a look at his site. Thanks.
