 The concept here was that when we see the face close up, gender can be elusive, much light published writing that doesn't carry an author's name. As we zoom out, our gender assumptions usually become more clear.
In the case of the quote, Woolf represents an intellectual who can be somewhat controversial - but more importantly, the image is simply a metaphor or symbolic representation of the quote.
