You know, what is makes a photo good? In my opinion, a photo is good if the mood and personality of the subjects comes through and evokes some emotion on those who view it. I think, if by looking at the photo you can get a feel for the subject's personality, what an amazing capture that is! Learning about another person simply by looking at lines, curves, light and darkness. I see this photo as being a wonderful capture of their love for each other. By looking, I can see that these two are genuine and this adds to the overall wonderfuness of the photo. All the technicallity in the world means nothing if you can't capture mood, and I believe that you have done that perfectly. High marks!

Artyste and dipaulk
Thank you for your comments. I wanted to let you know that is was the palest child I have ever photographed, the lights positively glowed off her translucent skin. Compared to how dark her father's skin was I having a terrible time getting her to look natural. Had this been a members challenge I could have spot edited giving her a little more depth and more color. In the end I decided to go with this shot because I love the look on her dad's face. Everyone should have dad look that happy when hugged by his little girl. I'm in no way complaining about how this photo placed -- 121 is really good in a challenge os 638 very well done photos -- Debi |

I didn't comment originally, but I thought I'd address dipaulk here and offer an explanation as to why I voted a 6.
While I love the emotion in this photograph, I feel that it suffers a little technically. The highlights on the girl's face are really over-exposed, and constitute a major hotspot. I feel that it also looks a little artifically smooth (whether this is a product of the defused glow or not, I'm not sure, but in voting I didn't know that, and simply felt it *looked* over-smooth). I also feel that the crop was too much on the girl's side, cutting off her hair, and ending the dynamic a little too abruptly.
Anyway, just a couple little things, that other commenters also picked up on a little bit. It's a wonderful shot, you probably love it a lot, but I think it just got hit a bit much in comparison to some shots above it, and 121 out of 638 is a wonderful placing.

Debi, I think this is a wonderful photograph and am completely stunned by the large number of 6s and below. I can't imagine what people were thinking -- and judging from the comments you received there are plenty who agree with me. :) |

This is a great shot. My guess is that you are hammering the heart strings of every father with a little girl that has passed this wonderful stage of life. Bumping up to 9. |

Great sot, I like the candid feel and this makes a great portrait. I can easily feel the warmth and intimacy here. 9. |

The light on the girl's face is a bit harsh. Otherwise nice tonality and emotion. |

Cute shot, looks a little neat-imaged. Nice contrast between light and dark, rough and soft. |

This is definitely going to win some major cutie pie points. Tones are wonderful. The childs face appears a little overexposed, but judging from the coloring of daddy's face I would say it is probably due to beautiful, light skin tones rather than lighting problems. Maybe a little too much nostil in this pose; however, the mood and the expressions more than compensate for any minor distractions. I am guessing top 10. Scoring a 9 from me. |

Great family shot! Unfortunately the high brightness and possibly compensated contrast is washing out the girls arm and he face. With those aspects improved I'd have given this a nine, at least. For now, a 7. Good luck! |

Great shot! Most of the tones are well done. Good composition.
However, the girls face has an appearance of a "mask of light". Not totally flattering - a bit harsh. |

Why is Dad's nostril (which we can see waaaay up) at dead center? This is an adorable photo, though. Is there a way to make the girl more prominent in it? Even her painted nails are cute. |
