Shouts out to the great ericlimon! 8-) ... I was originally trying to use both a lemon and a lime slice in the same shot, but it was just too much.

A slice of lime. On my brand new homemade 600W fluorescent light box. Red gel over part of the box.

Nikkor 50mm/1.8D with extension tube. Tripod. Self-timer. Manual focus. Manual exposure. Preset white balance. RAW processed with UFRaw and GIMP 2.1.7. Cropped. USM. Scaled. USM. Added border.

Yes, I know there are a couple of specs--imperfections--I was going to retake the shot once I noticed them, but I couldn't get another shot as nice. Except for the one ruined by a hair in the middle of the shot, which I didn't notice until I had it on my computer. :-(

Self-critique, and including the biggest points made by commenters. I'm doing this to try to improve for future shots.

The Good:
+ color color color! complementary colors w/ high saturation
+ interesting and sharp detail on the peel
+ the darkness of the peel provides contrast to the bright areas, and separates the red and green areas
+ lighting, the lime looks like it's glowing, and good balance between background and foreground brightness

The Bad:
- some red bled through the the lime
- border too bold
- little yellow highlights

Congrats on your top ten finish Colin!
Very good detail here. My eyes still hurt looking at it! LOL
Well Done!

Oooh, my second 6th place in a row! Whee!

Oh, and don't kick Eric! ;-) It's just me, searching for a fun title. It was originally a lime & lemon shot. Hence, "limon".

If the title isn't a typo, Eric deserves a kick. Great color, though the border is a bit much.

i am going to go shoot this to see what background color i find the most pleasing. somehow, the red seems too strong, but i can't say for sure.

great color contrast, wonderfull definition, I really like this shot with only one small complaint. I dont like the tiney yellow dots on the bottom of the lime. One of my top picks. Keep up the great work.

I love this, the red showing through is perfect. Not crazy about the boarder (and I usually like boarders) I think it takes away from the pure red. Still very cool 9 with the boarder 10 without.

I guess this should have been a different tone of the red, doesn't quite go together, but i'll look at it again on a better calibrated monitor. White border is too bright imo.

would have been better if it was actually in focus
11/10/2004 08:54:45 AM
I'm not keen on the border, but other than that it's a great macro. The red is a bit 'in your face' though, maybe a more subtle colour would have worked better?

Great colors, this is an excellent photo. The red background help sets it off.
