Thanks everyone, yep I would have to agree with the rough-legged. Not normally in this area but the write-up says they migrate from the Arctic to the south so probably just stopping for lunch and a rest. |

I don't think you can accurately identify a bird by beak alone. All raptors have curved beaks. I don't agree with kestrel or falcon - kestrels are tiny, and doesn't have the eye marks that a prairie falcon would have, and definitely not a peregrine. I think hahn23 is correct, as roughies are also very common and about the size of a redtail or slightly larger. In flight they have black patches at the *wrist* area, which is a good way to tell them apart from redtails.

Offhand, based on the beak, I'd say this was either a kestrel or a falcon, maybe a kite, and definitely not a hawk. |
